Which motor for your e mountain bike?

motors that you can get. I do get a lot of questions
about what do I think of the Bosch versus the Shimano, and I thought I’d head down and see Martin and would have a chat and get his thoughts on the range
of different motors. So hopefully you enjoy that. Definitely let me know your

to date with the latest and freshest ebike stuff. So I’ll catch you in a bit. There’s a selection of
motors that you can get. Which is really, really cool
from a buyer’s standpoint, but also probably a little bit confusing. So we’ve got two newer types of motor, TQ that’s coming out in
the FLYONs next year, and the FAZUA motor
that we saw in Eurobike and the TQ motor actually. And then Bosch, Yamaha, Brose, and Shimano.
– Shimano. So if someone is brand new to bikes what’s the biggest difference
between all of them? How do you help people understand? – It’s a really good question
because it’s so tricky, and I suppose it does
come down to how they ride at the end of the day. And in an ideal environment
we’d have one of every motor and you could sort of back-to-back them, which is maybe something
that we should do, but I think it depends on what you’re looking for in a motor. What we were discussing earlier about really high performance systems in terms of torque, power,
delivery, and the assistance, I think it will break the market up into different segments
so you’ve got that, I’d say for example, like the FLYON system that really covers that
really high performing area. – Yeah, well, that’s that brand promises we are e-performance isn’t it? It’s like the most high performance electric mountain bike switch. That’s their kind of statement for that. On that FLYON seems to
be pushing the boundaries of what you can (mumbles)
– It ticks all the boxes and it wins top trumps
at the end of the day. And then on the complete
other end of the spectrum you’ve got stuff like
the FAZUA that is more for your regular mountain bike that just wants a little bit of power delivery in the background so not sort
of punch power all the time. And the side effect of
that, smaller batteries, smaller motors, lighter weight systems, so it all kinda goes hand in hand. And then I suppose if you use them to sort of each end of the
scale you’ve got the Brose, Shimano, Bosch, Yamaha. How would I describe the systems? Pros and cons? I suppose like for example the
Bosch is internally geared, nice punchy power, good smooth delivery, little bit more resistance, for example, because you’re internally gearing that, whereas like the Brose, for example, it isn’t so you’ve got faster
rolling, smoother rolling outside of the in power zones. But then I find that the
Brose is like a sort of a smoother system to use but not as punchy as the Bosch, for example. So you’ve always kind of
got pros and cons both ways. I’d say the Yamaha probably
sits in between those two just in respect that it has got quite high performance figures, so it’s more closely matched to the Bosch but with the external gearing so it’s a bit more like the Brose in that respect, so it’s kind of a bit of
a mashup between the two. So quite a nice kind
of in between balance. The Shimano is more like
the Yamaha and Brose, again, ’cause it’s externally geared. It’s more like, I’d say
the FAZUA and the Brose in terms of the power. So basically you’ve just got three modes, you pretty much leave it
in trail the whole time. You’ve got the boost mode
which is a little bit like the Bosch but maybe not
quite as high performing, and the eco mode which is
more like the other bikes, so yeah, it’s a really difficult question because I think it really depends what you’re using the bike
for, what you actually want, and how you like it to feel. And there are different
motors for different tasks, which is cool because,
you know, back in the day we had one or two
choices and now we’ve got all of these choices which is great. But also I think it comes down, not just about the motor and how it rides but also the support in the back of it because there are certain manufacturers that are really going
heavy on the support, more so than others in
terms of the service centers that are allocated and the the spare parts that are held in stock
and the time span of that, and the kind of turnaround in
the event of an issue as well. So I think it kind of comes together as a whole package when
you’re buying a bike, what you get that is sometimes overlooked. Yeah, there is problems from time to time, but if you’ve got a motor
supplier that’s very good and quick at resolving that
then that obviously, you know. – Yeah, I think that’s really important, that whole user experience, like just from buying
it when you’ve got it, what if something goes wrong,
how do you get it fixed? How long will it take? Because you don’t want to be without your bike really, do you? Because they’ve got a lot of tech in them. You can’t really just unbolt it. It’s, I guess it’s a little bit more in depth to get ’em
serviced and replaced. – And some systems you can plug in and access that motor and diagnose it, some systems you can’t. So there’s like software
side of things to it as well. And I think from a UI point of view some motors you can connect your phone to and you can play with
the settings and things. Some motors don’t. They’re kind of more fixed out the factory of what they’ve given you. Yeah, there’s a whole
different realm of things depending on what sort of motor choice and what you want out of the bike as well. – Cool, what are you riding? Are you still riding
your is it the Moustache? – Yeah, I’ve got a Bosch CX at the moment on the Moustache race which I love, and I keep thinking I should change, but it’s one that I don’t
really need to change it. So I think I probably will
move it forward to next year because I’ve been a couple
of years on that bike now. What do I change it for? I would say I don’t know but
I’ve got a bike in order. – Like between choosing
between all your children. (laughing) I mean I’m quite privileged
because these are all of my bikes and I get to ride
a lot of different stuff. So I’m in slightly different position. But if I’m being honest,
to mix it up a bit I have got an eZesty on order. – Have you? – Yeah, so an ultimate with the FAZUA. – Can I have a ride of it when you get it? (mumbling) Amazing. – I just fancy something a bit different. Obviously it’s a much lighter bike. Haven’t got much experience of the system so it’d be quite nice to kinda
get more hands on with that. You rode it at Eurobike? – Yeah the motor was in, I think
it was in a focus hardtail, so it was just more of a trying
to get a sense of the motor. It was on the flap so
there wasn’t like a huge, there was a little
trial area wasn’t there? But it wasn’t, but I was quite pleasantly
surprised with it, because when we were talking to the guys at FAZUA and Nikko actually, so it wasn’t hugely punchy, but I felt it was pretty good actually. – Well the same sort of thing. And the thing, like,
my Bosch CX I can just kinda leave it in one mode
of set, it’s about right, but every now and again I do like if I’m doing a really
big climb or something I will stick it up and really
use the bike to its advantage. And that was one of the
things with the FAZUA system, I was thinking am I gonna lose that? And I kinda quite like that, not all the time, but sometimes. But after riding a Eurobike I thought, actually, this, everyone’s
kind of underrating this motor, and actually when you put
it up in the high modes it does kind of give you that as well. So I think it’s good balance. And I think it’s, I’m looking forward to riding a 17, 18 kilo bike as well, which is quite cool. So yeah, I mean, I change,
I say I change ’em, but I’ll probably change
them every couple of years, but I’m quite excited about that one. So a little bit different I suppose. – Yeah, and from what I
can see, from all the stuff that I’m kinda posting online, anytime there’s like an Instagram pic with that Lapierre Zesty,
there’s so much interest in it. (mumbling) – It looks awesome. So you’ve got that on one
end and then the FLYON with the TQ motor – Yep, completely different.
– on the other end haven’t you? So I think 2019 is gonna be
a massive year for ebikes, so there’s a lot of people
that are joining the forum that are brand new to ebiking, and I think it’s a really
good time to be looking at buying a bike because there’s so much advancement in the technology, there’s so much innovation,
so much R and D. Andy, they guy on the camera right now, is looking at getting one next year. We’ve been talking about
different options, talking about the Lapierre eZesty.
– eZesty. – I just think it’s a really great time to be getting into
electric mountain biking. – I think you’re right. It’s, we’ve had a lot of
technology changes over the year, but I think we, and that sounds crazy, ’cause things are always gonna evolve, but we really are at a peak at the moment. I mean, there’s not much kind of new battery technology out there, so that’s probably gonna
remain for quite a while. There’s new developments in
motors and stuff like that. So I think you’re right,
whereas like the early adopters were sort of more limited
on choice and things. I think now is one of the
biggest times to jump on it, just purely on choice and
technology, definitely. – Awesome. Well it’s like a playground
in here for a mountain bike and ebike lover. You’ve got so many different, how many bikes have you got in here? – I haven’t counted recently, too many. – There’s a lot of bikes in here. So thank you for kind of taking your time to explain the different
motors, different tech. I’m gonna have a look
at some of the bikes, get a couple of pictures.
