Hello and Welcome to another Bike and another Restoration I get asked a lot where do I find these Bikes from This one was quiet an interesting story I had been out Cycling I was dressed in lycra and in the traffic a couple of cars a head, I seen a van on its way to the scrap yard I seen this Bike on top of all the metal and I just seen a small green flashes which gave the Bike a way and I thought I need to pursue that Bicycle and save it from going to the scrap heap we pulled up at some red lights I had a chat with the driver and I obtained the Bike from their and thats how I actually got this one so all that I would say to anyone is if you want a Bike to restore just keep your eyes peeled and look here there and everywhere these Bikes really are worth saving a lovely Bike this but we will get onto this in a minute first of all who is Carlton? well, Carlton is a company which was based here in England in the UK here and it started with a gentleman called Fred Hanstock in 1898 would you believe it the company started in Nottinghamshire in a small village called, wait for it Carlton in Limrick hence the name Carlton a gentleman called Dan O’Donavan started at the company He was an extremely good sales man and took the Carlton Company to success and later took over the company in the 1960’s the Raleigh brand took over the Company so they took a big interest in the Carlton name took the company over but continued to build bicycles under the Carlton name until the mid 1980’s which brings us on to our Bike here it ranges around the mid 1980’s so its a later model of the Carlton range but its got Reynolds 501 tubing and it reminds me very much of the Raleigh Sirocco Bike that they did because it had a mixed group set on their so on the front here we have got Shimano Gold Arrow which later became the 105 group set so its got a Gold Arrow front mech front gear levers but the rest of the group set is Weinmann brakes so its a mixed group and that is exactly how the Sirocco was so our Bike here well the saddle that will need replacing I do have a lovely saddle available regards to that the front end here we have got some Shimano Exage levers which are not original so I will probably be looking at taking the Bike back to its original state the frame itself lovely drop outs on the rear of the frame here as I say it has Weinmann brake callipers I do not know how this Bike runs this is exactly how I got it from the gentleman on the van before we do anything as we generally always do lets get this Bike stripped down and we are going to take it from there OK Brilliant well their is the Bike all stripped down it has been no problem at all up until this bottom bracket and also the pedal arm the pedal arm the thread had gone and I was really struggling to get the tool in into the pedal arm to extract it and I put it back onto the stand itself to go and get some tools and would you believe it, it was very amusing I thought so anyway the actual pedal arm just fell off the spindle so that was a relief and the other one was this cup on this drive side I had to get the tool in the vice I have given this tip before put the tool in the vice to put the cup in and then you can get the leverage on their because it very stiff it has been in their since the Bike was built which was some time ago so yes, it is all stripped down now we have a bucket down here with all the parts in which needs a good cleaning so lets get a move on with that, and give this Bike some special loving So far what we have done is rubbed down the frame with a T-Cut solution if you are unaware of what that is it is just a product for the Car Industry for the paint it brings up these frames really well we use it a lot in these videos if you are unaware so we have done that what I have also done on this rear stay here their was quiet a bit of chipping from the chain a little bit of rust so what I have done is treated the rust with a K-rust solution which eats away at the rust itself and then I have used a strip a chain stay strip a chrome one very in keeping with this age of Bike I got it from a Company called VeloBitz it was only a couple of pounds so very good product to use on these Bikes I have also bought and I have managed to get hold of a new Crankset if you remember the pedal arm the thread the thread for extracting it had perished come away so we have bought a new Crankset its a Gold Arrow one as well very good condition indeed so looking forward to getting this polished up this really does clean up this Gold Arrow stuff and I have also got the rear mech as well if you remember the Bike came with the front mech and also the levers but the rear mech was in a bit of a bad condition so I have got hold of a Shimano Gold Arrow rear mech these clean up absolutely beautiful so looking forward to doing that and I have also got some Weinmann levers if you remember it had new aero levers which was not in keeping with the time scale of this Bike itself so I have got some Weinmann levers to go with the Callipers so it is exactly the same spec as the Raleigh Sirocco now with the Reynolds 501 full Shimano Gold Arrow running gear but with the Weinmann brakes one little item I did manage to get hold of as well these are getting extremely hard to obtain which is the Vintage shiny bar tape it is in the peal white as well I just feel it will set it off really well so I am looking forward to getting the handle bars taped up we have polished some metal parts all ready and I have to order some Gum wall tyres for them wheels so lets get a move on with cleaning these parts up we are nearly there now and we should be getting ready for the assembly soon so lets get a move on with that Well we are at the final stage of the Restoration which is the rebuild I feel this is the best part of the project this is where you see all your hard work come together and you see the Bike in its full glory so where are we up to we have all the gear ready to go ready to be assembled as we general do the Gold Arrow group set is absolutely blinging it is absolutely stunning it has come out really well if you do want some more information on polishing metal then their is a video available that I have done to watch which gives more details on actually polishing metal but yes this group set is stunning I can not wait to get it back on the Bike I did say that we had a lovely saddle we have got a San Marco Rolls Saddle in Black so this is an upgrade in its self so yes thats there we have got some aero pedals and we have also got some Gum wall tyres on the wheels ready to go so without further a do lets get this Bike back together and back on the road WOW! well can you believe that this Bike was actually on its way to the tip it is another Bike saved and its good for a good few years yet to enjoy and to ride so yes really really happy that we have managed to save this Bike it was a great opportunity as I say it was on the back of the van their it was on its way and what a lovely Bike to start any project regards to doing these Restorations it does not always have to be a high level the enjoyment is at every level what a lovely piece and what a great Bike really happy with this as I say the Gold Arrow really sets it off and the chrome stay at the back as well that was a great solution so really happy if you do watch these videos we generally finish these builds with a water bottle we still have the ride so hold on for that so regards to a water bottle I have one just here very Vintage very Retro and in keeping with the Bike its self plain white I feel fantastic it really sets the Bike off, all thats left to do now is get the Bike out… and try it out, I can not wait! WOW! Well what a ride and what a transformation to think that this Bike was only moments away from being scrapped it was on the back of the van if you remember it was only down to the green flash on the forks that caught my eye and I thought that I would have a chat and thats how we obtained the Bike so yes extremely happy that we have managed to save this Bike it really is not about how expensive these Bikes are its more about preserving them and bringing them back to life it really is a beautiful thing its not the most expensive but it really is a beautiful thing and I am really happy that we have managed to do it it really does give me a lot of joy to do so the other thing I wanted to point out really happy that we have managed to get hold of the crank set and the rear mech it really does complete the Bike and yes the Rolls saddle was an upgrade but I just could not resist so yes what a great result been if you do enjoy watching these videos and you are not a Subscriber as I generally always say then please subscribe its completely Free of charge other than that then thanks for watching…and Bye for Now!
