The Year Of The E-Bike | EMBN Show Ep.52 Boxing Day Special

(electronic buzzing) – Who’s this guy, looks pretty wooden. – Did you invite him? Doesn’t say much, does he? – Doesn’t say much at all.
– Bit boring. – Ay, lads, let’s get gnarly! (laughing) You two look absolutely hanging. Big day then yesterday there boys? – Big day, big day, big day. – Come on it’s boxing day. We’ve got a big day ahead of us. It’s the sporting day of the year. – Yeah. – So there you go. In classic Georgia Leslie fashion, the spinning top introduces
the EMBN Boxing Day show. But Georgia don’t talk to
me about sporting events. Last time I saw you was on
the 1,000 foot dead challenge where you smoked me (laughing) by like two minutes
over a ten minute hill. – [Georgia] You can’t
get over that can you? – [Steven] I can’t get over that. – [Chris] Still cries over that regularly. – Unbelievable. – Chris looks rough doesn’t he? – He does. You look a bit hanging Chris. Those kids been running riot again. – Yeah you’re no stranger to
getting home late or early depending on how you want to look at it. (laughing) – Maybe we should start
talking about bikes on the EMBN Boxing Day show. – I think so. – Georgia you work for Specialized, how’s the levers been going? No need for that put your suit back on. How’s the levers been going? – Really good. Really good. The new one obviously we had
that launch in September, and it is all off the shelves. – Crickey. So, you’ve been out and about
you’ve been around the world. But look seriously
what’s been the feedback between e-bikers and non e-bikers what’s the vibe out there in
the woods and in the mountains? – There’s a big e-bike vibe
going on at the moment. – Mhm. – There’s loads of riding
groups where one person will get an e-bike and then it
ends up the whole group being an e-bike group. – Really? Wow. – Yeah it’s cool. You know people are worried about being the first person to get an e-bike, but then when one person
does then the rest of them think it’s acceptable so then
they all end up getting them. – Wow. – It’s good. – Well it’s good for
Specialized obviously. I bet it’s been good for
all you e-bike brands. What are you looking
forward to this year Chris? – E-bike wise? – Yeah. Apart from 700,000 mile batteries. – 1,000 mile batteries.
– Wow. – I wanna see all that advancement and see you getting rid of
that doralian cassette off the back end of that bike. It’s like retro technology combined with super tech stuff motors, batteries, then you’ve got a crappy
old doralian cassette on the back of your bike. (sighing) – Needs to get changed. – George can knock a drill off the back of your bike with a hammer. – Can she? – Uh huh, I’ve got one in me bag. – In terms of gear box, motor, that’s what I want for next
year on the next e-bikes. – Not very fussy is he? – Did you get any aunties or
uncles around on Boxing Day? – Well it depends doesn’t it. – On what?
– Massive family comes around. All my family comes around for Boxing Day. – Do they? – Yeah. – To your house? – Yeah. – We’ve actually got some relatives coming around here very soon. – Auntie Blake. – So 2018 has very much
been the year of the e-bike. Chris what’s been the highlight of your year in terms of e-bike? And obviously you started in July? – Yeah with tricks and stuff?
– Yeah. – [Chris] Yeah slab that was
obviously crazy that big climb we did you know you and me up there. – [Steven] Yeah. – [Chris] You [Bleep] yourself at the bottom when we got there. That was funny. – [Georgia] Secrets are coming out! – [Chris] I was actually sick after that, you probably didn’t even know that. – [Georgia] Were you? – [Chris] Yeah. – [Steven] Maybe this should be a behind the scenes moment of 2018. – No I want to hear more about this. You were sick? – Yeah I was sick. For a while I tried too hard on that at the top of it, when was it? After I came doesn’t wasn’t it? I was sick. – Were you? – Yeah. – I have to say it was
an impressive video. – Yeah. – Oh that’s very kind Georgia.
– Thank you. – I wasn’t talking about you. – It was really physical. It was a really physical challenge. – Where was it? – What was more scary going up or down? – Well I couldn’t go down it could I? (laughing) It was ridiculous. It was absolutely ridiculous. And then ’cause there was a rock, I mean you have to be there to
realize if you miss the gear or the chain was snapped it
wouldn’t have been you sliding down a rock base it actually
would’ve been game over because there’s a 500
foot drop there, right? – [Chris] Yeah. Scary time’s usually going
down, jumping and stuff for me, but that actually climbing was what… – And what about the
1,000 foot dead Georgia? – Highlight of my year that. – Highlight of my year? – Because I thrashed Steve. – Totally 100%. – Let’s talk about thrashings. Remember that thrashing
you gave me as well? – Oh crickey. Remember all those fallings
off we had this year? There’s gotta be some of those
behind the scenes, right? Have you guys got any behind
the scenes of us falling off? – Oh yeah. – Or us messing up our lines? I’m sure there’s hundreds of them. Now it’s pointless having
wellies without having some socks thocks, thocks, thocks. (playful music) It doesn’t matter if
you laugh it’s Christmas you pissed a name. – Oh (bleep) I stood in (bleep). Like I literally walked it all around. (Groaning) (beep) – But what I want to know is
what do you guys want to see happening with e-bikes in 2019? – That’s big question Chris. – It is a big question. – From the surrey spinning top. – Oh yeah. Big one. – I want to see more people on
e-bikes get that whole thing dropped about you’ve got to be
old, you’ve got to be unfit, you’ve got to be fat and
lazy to ride an e-bike, I want to see all those
shredders out there, you know younger guys
getting on e-bikes and really exploring what’s possible
with these bikes, ’cause they are amazing we all know that. – I’m with you on that actually. That’s a good point. – Crickey. – What about you? – I think I’d like to see
more non race e-bike events. Because I think there can
be too much focus on e-bike racing when it’s not
really about the racing. It’s about y’know I use my
e-bike for just wandering around adventuring, doing stuff,
going there, exploring. I think the whole race thing, there’s always going to
be an inequality in racing whether it comes down
to the motor, the tires, the weight of the rider, the skin, I mean that’s racing, right? But I think e-bikes is
more about adventure and exploring than racing. – Yeah I’m with you on that. – And Christmas just
wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit from the relatives. And here we have Doddy over from GMBN Tech and fresh from a really
late night out in the town. – Alright boys. – How ya doing? You alright? – Hey Doddy. You’re the tech man. How on Earth do you get over
a really late night out? – Just pretend it didn’t happen. No seriously. There’s an unofficial
rule I always live by. – Yeah? – Last at the bar first at breakfast. Even if it absolutely kills you, it breaks everyone’s moral
and it makes you feel better. So the same this as… – You’ve broken me already. – Riding bikes. If you’re climbing and
you’re following someone, on a normal bike not an e-bike right? – Yeah yeah yeah yeah. – And you’re suffering, if they’re suffering more it’s worth it. – Oh k right. Hey listen man I’ve had
some big nights out, and you know there’s some
rules if you’ve double parked you can tip them away, but how do you get away with tequila. It’s always been a thorn
in my side that one. – Tequila, even when
sober, is enough to make me it gives me river mouth. (laughing) Do you know when your
mouth’s just like (hisses)? It’s hard. But you have to use neutralizer shots. – Neutralizer shots? – Yeah so it basically cancels it out. Well you kid yourself that anyway. It’s got like lime, mint,
coriander, various other stuff. You do the tequila then
you do it with something. – Chris we need to get some of that. – Where are we gonna get this from? – I don’t know. – Go ask Pilgrim he’ll tell you. – Doddy it’s been a hell
of a year on GMBN Tech. – Yeah. – What’s been the highlights
for you this year? What’re you looking forward
to that’s coming ahead? – Well tech wise specifically? – Yeah tech wise. Give us some love over
from the GMBN Tech side. – Well for me I think the
number one thing this year is that stuff we first sort of boshed at the first round of the
Cross Country World Cup. The whyler stuff that’s
going to be coming from Shram at some point. So we shot on Nino Schurter’s bike. Have you seen it on a few other bikes now? – [Steven] Yup. – [Doddy] Get rid of all those wires. Life is going to be a lot better I think. – [Steven] Yeah no wires keep it all nice and quiet on the bike. – [Doddy] Yeah. – [Steven] Nice clean bike. – [Chris] Can’t wait to get onto that. – It makes a lot of sense doesn’t it? I mean of course it’s going to be super expensive when it does come out, but it has to come in from
the top and feed down. – Yeah. – But I think it is a winner. – Right. – Straight out. – Yeah I’m looking
forward to that in 2019. But let’s talk about some
more seasonal tech Doddy. More seasonal tech here. I’m gonna be out and about in
the woods the next few days, I got a bottle of beer. – Oh nice. – Some Daura Damm there. – Gluten free beer? – Can you give us some tips on opening a bottle of beer in the woods? Or anywhere in town? In a van anything. On set even. – Leverage stones. – Leverage? – Leverage that’s all it is. – Can’t believe that’s
a very good invention. – Anything will do. – Yeah what have you got? There you go there’s a set. What have you got on the set here? – Use your teeth c’mon. – There’s a flex stem from. – 1960? – 1995 approximately. (laughing) That will probably. – [Steven] Really? – Yup. – There you go. Done. – Sorry. (laughing) – Flex stem. – Flex stem. – Flex stem beer lid to head. – And from a tech point of view
this is actually quite cool so it’s one of those
awful things I’ve made. (laughing) Suspension stem so your bar position changes as you go along. – Doddy fantastic. Looking forward to seeing you
on some e-bikes this year. We had a great trip this year. – [Doddy] I honestly can’t wait actually. That will be the highlight of my year if it turns out before Christmas. I’m expecting an e-bike, and I’m hoping to do some
more stuff for you guys. – [Steven] Yeah. – [Chris] Amazing. – [Steven] And we had a great
trip this year didn’t we? – [Doddy] That was amazing, but I want to do some
more stuff with Chris. I’ve ridden with Chris
many times over the year. – Let me get my coat. (chuckles) – Yeah cool. But seriously we’ve ridden
a lot over the years. – Yeah we’ve done loads of stuff. – Yeah I’m looking to revisit
some of that stuff so. – Get out there exploring. – Exciting, yeah. – I’m excited for that. – He’s gone to see some more relatives. Doddy see ya later. There is always a visit from some daft uncle at Christmas time, and they don’t come much
dafter than Martin Ashton. ♪ Ahhh ♪ – What an intro? (laughing) What an intro? And accurate too. Very accurate. Merry Christmas. – Yeah Merry Christmas. – Merry Christmas.
– Merry Christmas Martin. – Good fun isn’t it. – Yeah. – Have you got any daft uncles? – Um. – Or aunties? – Well sad story passed
away about five years ago. (laughing) You did ask. – Moving on. – Yeah so but I am a daft uncle. – Yes. – To Cody, and Lexy, and Flynn, and Miles, and Essie, yes hello. – You must be that man of positivity? – Definitely he’s the biggest positive team member on GMBN, EMBN ever. What’s your top positivity tips to get us through that Christmas period Mart? – Drink. – Drink? – At the moment it feels bad. The answer is a drink. Every time. Usually and have a glass
of water now and again. – Yeah. – That’ll keep you going. – Yeah. – Did you see cousin Doddy? Cousin Doddy’s lookin’
a bit rough isn’t he? – He is. Well everyone I’ve seen
over Christmas period so far is looking pretty on edge. – And we’ve not even seen Blake. (laughing) – He’s popping around later around here. – I’ve seen Blake. It’s not good. It’s not good I’m not gonna lie. Hey can I try one of
your Christmas hats on? – Yeah why not? Hey Mart it’s been a great year on EMBN. – Ain’t it? Ain’t it just? – [Steven] Ain’t it then? – Ain’t it just? Was this a mistake? It feels like a mistake. – [Steven] What that? – Yes. I feel like I shouldn’t have put it on. Can I get an honest opinion, Josh? – [Josh] I think it looks great. – You lyin’ little son of a. Right. – Mart any highlights from the year? Highlights from EMBN. – EMBN this year. Well I think it’s been an
incredible year for EMBN I think you guys have been. – Us guys? – You guys. – Us guys? – Yeah I think you guys… – This is all good for
arguments as well isn’t it? – Yeah oh yeah but I feel I’m trying to compliment you here. Do you know what I mean? You have to try hard. (laughing) I think you guys have been instrumental in clicking over that hill
of negativity of e-bikes, and I think you’ve been a big
part of a lot of people going “You know what? I might try an e-bike.” – How nice. – I think it’s true. I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true. – Such a positive guy. – Yeah no I think it’s
been a great year for EMBN. And e-bikes in general. I’m looking forward to them. I’ve got a new one coming
next year haven’t we? Sh don’t tell anyone. – That’s massive that’s massive. – Oh I can’t wait to ride it. – Our Boxing Day would not be Boxing Day without a party trick Martin. – I’ve got a party trick. – I’ve been practicing this.
– What have you got? – Right now have either
of you got a mobile phone? – Oh crickey I have actually yeah. – ‘Cause my party trick is, right? – Yeah. – I can make you. – There’s my phone. – I can make you a mobile phone. – Case? – Case. – Can you make me a mobile phone camera? – No can you take that case off? – Huh? – Take that case off. – [Steven] Where on Earth
did you get this from? – I don’t know if it works yet. (laughing) – Forty. Are you forty yet? – No these are about eight years old. (laughing) Right ready? I’m gonna make you a new (air whooshing) mobile phone. (air whooshing) – [Steven] This looks like
it’s working well mate. – Ugh! Can I have one more go? One more go? (laughing) It’s gonna work don’t worry. – Do you guys know any Christmas jokes? While we’re waiting? No jokes? – Right this is it. – Right this is it. – Okay. – This is it. Is it the right color balloon? – I nearly! That was close? – What exactly are you
trying to do Martin? – I’m gonna make you a new mobile. – You screwed. – Maybe can you make me
a new mobile phone maybe? – I’m gonna make you a
new mobile phone case. – Right take three. – Out of this balloon. (chuckling) – Here we go first try. (air whooshing) It’s hard to blow these up lads. – Give us a balloon. – Right. – I think we need a supply of about ten balloons for this one. – Don’t worry I’m gonna do it
this time it’s gonna be fine. I think it’s just the technique. (laughing) – You mother (bleep)! Right I want one more go. I’ve got more balloons. (rubber squeaking) – Right here we go. Here are some back-up balloons. – If you do my part. (air whooshing) – Ugh. – It’s really hard that last bit isn’t it? – It is isn’t it? (air whoosing) – Yes! – Oh my God he’s done it! – I did it! (laughing hysterically) Loot at that! It (bleep) worked! – That’s amazing. I’m gonna keep that. Oh Martin that is awesome.
– That’s my party trick. – That’s the best one ever. – Just let go. Yes! – See? – I’m 40 well look at that. – Look at his one. – And this is Christmas. This is what happens if
Christmas were everyday. (air whooshes) – So it’s like being me and you. (chuckling) There you go that’s my party trick. – Mart it’s great having
you around on Boxing Day. Let’s get stuck in some beers. – Yes let’s do it. (whoosh) – Chris there’s always some struggling cousin at Christmas time, right? – Yeah we got Auntie Blake around head in his hands not looking too good. – Now this is actually as is happening. (chuckles) Aw Blake. Blake Blake Blake. – Yeah? – You know how do you avoid temptation at Christmas time clearly… – There’s none. – Huh? – You can’t you can’t. – How did you get wrapped into
all that nonsense last night? – My friend’s you know? You’ve got to hang out with them. – Entertain your friends. – Entertain your friends. – You make it sounds like a struggle. – No it’s really good. It’s good fun. – You can undo you’re fine you’re fine. – I’m struggling now. – You look a bit white today. You look a bit gray around the edges. – Blake Sampson he’s the man that takes things to the next level, right? – Yeah he is. Let’s talk about your time
on e-bikes this year Blake. What have you been doing? – Oh. – Pushing the limits? – Yeah I’ve pushed the
limits a little bit. Loving the e-bike at the moment. Got a Canyon Spectral AL. – [Chris] Nice. – [Steven] I like it. – [Chris] Seen it upside down as well? – Yeah. It was quite heavy. – Yeah? – Yeah it scared me a little bit. Then I went for an e-bike ride with Steve, but I was on a normal bike. – Oh did you enjoy that? – [Blake] Yeah we did like 17 kilometers. – [Steven] It was great. – [Chris] Good day out
in the rain and the wind? – [Blake] It was yeah really good. – [Chris] Howling rain? – [Blake] Yup. – [Chris] Yup. – Looks like you need to go and lie down. But before you do that. – Oh. – Let’s have your yearly party trick. Have you got a party trick? I’ve got a plate. – It’s called throwing up. – Huh? – Oh okay cool. I can’t spin plates. – You can’t spin plates? – No. – What can you spin? Your head? You can spin your head. – My head is spinning already. – Okay one plate, one creme caramel. Oh this man has previously
done three on the trot. But this morning on Boxing Day
it seems like Blake Sampson. – It’s Boxing Day, right? – It’s Boxing Day. – This went out on the 16th of December. This is out of date. Should I try it anyway? – Yeah it’ll be fine. It’ll be fine be fine. – Crickey. – I’m gonna stand away for this. – Alright. – [Blake] I think you should stop me. – [Steven] Hold on what? Do you know what? I did not know that was there. – [Blake] Did you not? – Is that there? That’s there for this very reason? – It’s for this reason look. – Oh my God. Holy! So those are actually
party creme caramels. – They contain them Steve. – I’ll just get um. – Yeah get the bucket ready. – Get the bucket ready here. – Is this down in one is it? – Yeah so the thing is what the trick about this is
you just gotta suck that up like straight away. – How many are you gonna do in a row? – One. – Fair. (laughing) Probably do half because
I don’t feel very great. I’ve had too much
Christmas pudding already. (laughing) Look at the state of it. – This guy takes things to the next level. This is Blake Sampson! – Ah I sorrow. – Come on just go on. (panting) – I can’t do it. – Go on. – I can’t. – You have to. – I can’t. Ah! I can’t. – Let’s go! (slurping) No way! (laughing) He’s done it! – I missed a bit. – That’s amazing! That is just… (laughing hysterically) – Chris go on. – Chris. – Go on you take things
to the next level as well. Suck it up. (slurping) (laughing) – Oh my God. – It goes in like a bullet. It goes. You’ve gone a bit red. – Nearly come out my nose. – That’s happened to me. – Oh dear. – It goes in it comes out. – There you go everyone. Get off down to the shops
and get your creme caramels and as you see Blake has
shown you by example. Nice one Blake. – How quickly can you? – Hey go have a lie down. Christmas. The God Father is always
around on Christmas. And luckily we have The Don with us. The Don. Why are you called The Don? – Why you ask Collin? – Why are you folding your arms? You feel uncomfortable or something? – Might rose acts out of the dirt called me The Don for first time. – Really why was that? – Is it warm in here Steve? – It’s… (laughing) I’ve not even got a hungover sweat. Actually Don you’re the God Father, how do you look after people on Christmas? – Drinks? – Yeah? – Any drinks? I don’t know. – What kind of drinks do
you go for Christmas time? – I see a beer by your right arm. – Okay would you like a drink? – No I’m alright thanks. – You sure? – Yeah. – You can have it if you want it. – It’s a bit early early for us to. – Eh it’s about seven
o’clock in the morning. Don party tricks? What’s your party trick? – I’m not sure I have one. – I heard you’re a master
at the cup game Don. Let’s see your skills. – Well I did do this at
last Thursday’s show, but I think I actually go
smoked by Madeline Carter she’s really good at this. – Let’s see your skills at this. – Go on. – Who’s gonna time it? We’ll have to do a race off
between the three of us? – Oh that’s a nice watch you got there Don maybe you can time it yourself. – Do it and time it? – Yeah. – Right. – Three, two, one, go. (plastic clanging) (laughing) – That’s pretty good. You can put a beer in that later. – Yeah. – Don what has been on EMBN? EMBN is one almost. – Yeah. – Had some good times. – Lots of travels. – Yeah. – And you’ve been a lot
of places haven’t ya? – Yeah it’s not about
me what about you Don? (laughing) Highlights of the year? – Highlights? – On e-bikes. I’ve seen you on an e-bike all the time. Not only you spend most
of your time on GMBN now, but there’s a sneaky
e-bike rides after a shoot. – I’ve still got my Kenevo and that is my diagonal bike. I’ve not ridden a diagonal
bike for probably eight years. – [Steven] Right. But why would you go pushing a bike? – [Don] Exactly that’s why I use my Kenevo as my shuttle bike and it’s such a good diagonal bike anyway that’s what I use it for. Can’t wait to get myself
a travel bike to be fair, and go off and do some
bit more epic rides. – Right. Nice. – Waiting on one. – So we gonna see you on EMBN
a little bit more next year? – Obviously if you guys give
me a call and do a good video I’ll do it yeah. – Definitely. – Everyone’s getting on the
band wagon Don isn’t they? – Yeah. – Huh? – Right. – Go on let’s go have a beer. (laughing) – That’s it. That’s the end of the Boxing Day special. Really hope you’ve enjoyed it. If you want to… – Whoa whoa whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa. – Do you know what? I was so glad the aunties and uncles came round to the EMBN show. Georgia it’s been a
pleasure having you around. But before you go we have got one last duty. – Ah the auntie plate. – It’s the spinning golden top. And a brace of creme caramels. – I’ve heard about this.
– Chris take it away. Chris show Georgia how it’s done. – Go on then. – Watch this. Check this out Georgia. – I don’t know if I want to see it. – It’s absolutely amazing. Top off. – Whoa! – Down with it. There you go. Blake can do three of these in the trot. – [Chris] Really? – [Georgia] Are you sure? – [Steven] Honestly it’s insane. – I don’t know about this after a pint. It’s not really much fun is it? – There you go look at that. Look at that, look at that! – Oh that looks really horrible. – Yeah I know. – Go ahead. – No! Look how wait wait wait. (laughing) – Ready? You watching? – Okay I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready. – Watch this. Watch your strings. (slurping) – Ah! (laughing) – [Steven] Ah without further ado. – There’s no way. – Over to you Georgia! – You’re joking. – Oh God give it a go. Go on give it a go. – Alright go on. – Give it a go. (laughing) – This is serious. – Do you want to put a hat on? – No. – You can tie it up. Actually put a hat on
anyway it’ll be hilarious. – What is going on here this eve? Oh no I don’t think I’m
gonna be able to do this? – You’ll be alright. – Do whatever. Whatever happens happens. Let Georgia take the top off. – Do you want to do it? – That’s like traditional. – That’s the tradition is it? – How do you do it? – Who knows? – Just go (imitates slurping noise) and just suck it straight up. Like a big Henry vacuum. You got it. No cheating. – Oh no. – I think you need to stand up. – Now big. (laughing hysterically) – And that’s the Christmas EMBN show. Thanks for joining us. Chris what have we got coming up? – If you want to see Georgia
smashing Steve on a 1,000 foot dead challenge that’s up here. Check that one out. – And also Sam Pilgrim what did he do? – Versus me at the bike park. – Versus you yeah. – As well. Give it a thumbs up if you enjoyed it, don’t forget to drop some
comments in the box below, don’t forget to subscribe to EMBN too, and we’ll see you in the next one.
