The Trial: Smith Vs Jones | E-Bike Trials Challenge

– Well, I’ll tell you what Chris, it’s not really any weather
for the hills today. I think we should keep down
on the valley out to the wind. – Sure, yeah, it’s pretty
nasty out there today. – Yeah, definitely need
some slower speed today. – Yeah, do it, trials? – Trials? – Yeah? – Yeah I’m just looking at your Instagram actually,
you seem to have got some amazing trial skills, look at that rock wall there, how the
hell do you get up there? – [Chris] Uh, I’ve ridden trials
for three years now Jamesy. – I’ll tell you what then, how
about loser buys the lunch? – Let’s do it. – Okay. (upbeat music) – So for trials. – Trials is all about slow speed maneuvering that bike around the woods something that I’ve done
over the years, loads of and I’ve seen that trials bike
hidden away in your garage. – So we’re looking at rocks roots? – Yeah, but rocks roots,
just things like that but we’re gonna have a
scoring system as well, do you know how that works? – Well, which scoring system
would you like to use? – Traditional trials,
motorbike bike trials. – Okay, so we’re looking at
one, two, three and five, one point for you when
you have one foot down. – Yeah. – Two points for having two feet down, three for putting three
feet down, or five for– – Failure or a complete
crash in the section. – Right, so here’s a rock. – Yeah, go well in it thief. – Haha, it’s a bit ambitious. – I think so let’s start
with a bit more of a warm up. – Okay let’s go to challenge number one. – Get in to it. – Alright Chris heads or tails? – Heads. – Heads it is. – Let’s get a coin? – Yeah heads it is, do you
wanna go first or second? – Uh, I’ll go first as heads. – Okay, Chris goes first. Now Chris, obviously on motorcycle trials they ride their tires about
for to five psi right? – Right. – Are you gonna have four
to five in that tire? – I only got one to two psi I think Steve. – Yeah so you’ve gone
through the three senior 27.5 on a 2.8 tire. – Yeah. – It’s bags of grip on that. – It should be good I reckon. – That’s probably the
perfect trials tire right? – And I’ve got my nice Yamaha (mumbles). So you’ve got those skinny 29-ers, you’re gonna be wheels
spinning around everywhere. (soft upbeat music) – Section one! – Alright first gear, extra power mode nice tight turn straight away,
we’re allowed non stopping, allowed to stop their seat aren’t we? – [Steve] Yeah. Oh look at that, that was so smooth. Ah he’s making it easy, making it so, oh, oh five? He’s fived it. – My motor cut out. – He fived it (laughing) – Hold on, what’s going on there? – Can I check your motor out? – Honestly. – Let me have a look. You might of cut out it. It seems to be pretty good to me. I think it’s rider error Chris. Five marks for Chris Smith, section one. – Steve Jones, dropping in. – I’m feeling a bit
tense because obviously you’ve got those bounce around skills. – [Chris] You’ve got that, look at this. (soft upbeat music) Cleaned it, Steve Jones
on the clean, nice. – Look. (upbeat music) – Okay, this is section
two, loads of tight turns big rock steps, decent rock
slab and a big (mumbles) rock. Jones is dropping in. (soft upbeat music) Up on to the big rock slab. It’s nice. – There’s a tree right in front. – [Chris] Nice brake control. – Oh my God. – [Chris] Come on Steve, you got it. Whoa. Nice. (Steve laughing) I thought you had to turn round the cart? – No just past the rock
(mumbles) tree line. Whoa. Clean, yes. – [Chris] You have to
rebuild the course line. – Chris you better drop into
the big rocks of section two and start with a really tight turn and then you’re gonna drop and, oh dear. (Chris laughing) This is actually turning
into Lauren Hardy. (Chris laughing) What are you doing? The great thing with trials is like you don’t get a second chance, once you’re in you’re
in, what are you doing? – It’s not a good day today, is it? (soft upbeat music) – [Steve] Okay, section number three. – [Chris] Big steep section coming in, real steep with a nice
front brake control. (soft upbeat music) (both laughing) Look at that, nice, well done. – What was that, two? – [Chris] Two. – So Chris is rolling in
on section number three. The problem of this section
is not the first part but the real difficult slippy exit to it. (soft upbeat music) He keeps his momentum, oh beautiful. Should have kept it going. – I know, pedal strike, isn’t it? – [Steve] That was almost, almost there. – Is that a five then? – [Steve] Of course, what
are you doing at the minute? – [Chris] Padeling. – [Steve] Is that a five in
as you’re pushing the bike out of the section? (soft upbeat music) Wow Chris, these first three sections were not so good for you right? – No you hammered me on those Steve. – But do you know what I love? Let’s go out and about looking for new stuff, new challenges. – I guess that is getting
your name all over it right? Or is that more my sort of thing? – Ya I would. Oh look at that there,
look at that slab there. That’s pretty cool. – Inside that tree up on over there then? – Inside the tree and up the rock. – Yeah. – That’s the great thing
when you’re out and about on the bike and you come
across stuff like that. – Yeah. – And, little bit of banter right? – Let’s do it. – Okay, so we’re gonna go
inside the tree or outside? – Inside the tree. – Right okay, who’s going first? – You. – Right, so maximum
gear whoa that is steep. That is steep (screams) oh God (yells) – [Chris] Straighten out. – [Steve] Straight out. – Right. – [Steve] Go easy. – Easy easy easy. God. (soft upbeat music) – So section five introduced
a lot more predictability as Chris Smith puts it so Chris, it’s a similar matter of up on the rocks spin it round and back down again loads of grip, loads of control, I wanna see you cleaning this one. – Easy.
– Easy. (soft upbeat music) So, third gear, powering up
that bank, hmm interesting. – You go ahead Steve. – Now, I don’t think you
need to be so aggressive. How about we actually
bring start a lot closer? how about we give it, a meter, how about we make the start here? – [Chris] That’s a big meter innit? (soft upbeat music) The close didn’t run up this time. – It’s not run up, is it? Trials are all about balance right Chris? – [Chris] Yup. – Nicely done. I guess that’s a different skill right? – [Chris] Yeah. (soft upbeat music) – Five, three, and if you get
right down here, it’s a clean but as you can see it’s like only about three inches wide down the bottom. (soft upbeat music) Oh, I reckon that’s a three. – Just on it.
– Yeah. (soft upbeat music) So Chris just said watch and
weep, like classic standing up technique where there’s
no grip in that back tire goes for a right hand
turn, and unfortunately, he does a five. You blamed the bike, you blamed the tires, you’ve blamed the seat and
now, you’re blaming my farts from preventing you up to climb,
I’ve actually heard it all. – [Chris] I’ve inhaled it as
I come up this climb here. – He actually just said, that
I can’t believe that your fart put me off (laughing) So I’m gonna give the hill
climb a go, and check the gears. I’ve got my seat down, I’mma
go for the slow approach. Ooh crickey it is super stiff,
super slippy but I think you’ll find Chris, that is a clean. – [Chris] Yeah, well try
the step down then Steve. – Ooh, let’s have a look at that. Crikey. Do you know what Chris, I’ll give you five, 10, 15 marks to be
able to do (bleep) like that. It’s just not in my genes
to roll on that one. (soft upbeat music) Chris, scores on the
doors that’s lap one then. Pretty tough first lap, I mean I heard every excuse in the book. So let’s go for another lap, before that how about some sausage and mash, get some more grip on that back tire. – Get some grip, get some weight, yeah. Not feeling too good but
yeah I reckon after lunch I’m gonna bring this back. – Nice, alright lunch it is. (soft upbeat music) Run two Chris Smith. – Sounds like Christmas when
you say that, I like it. (soft upbeat music) – Ooh, crikey, that’s
harder than it looks innit? Okay run number two. – [Chris] Go on Steve, you’ve got it. (soft upbeat music) Easy. Clean for Steve, good work. – [Steve] Right, move on to section two. (soft upbeat music) So lap number two on the big rocks. Ah this like pretty hideous
here, it’s like a double drop. – [Chris] Real sketchy
that rock slightly mind. Watch that (mumbles) there! Easy. Clean. – Chris Smith run number two,
remember there was a little rock that had him off on the first lap. So he’s gonna try to avoid that, run number two and he drops– – [Chris] Droppin’ in. (soft upbeat music) – Oh, oh, oh, well held. That’s a dab on the tree
we’ll give him that. – [Chris] One dab is it? – One dab. (laughs) As he goes into the double drop. (laughing) I’ll give you
the benefit of the doubt. I’ll give you the benefit of
the doubt, I’ll give you two. (soft upbeat music) – [Chris] Steve lap number
two coming into the section. (soft upbeat music) He’s on it, around the corner. – [Steve] Some controversy
in there I think. – [Chris] What would you call it, a three? – Okay here he goes, second
lap now, section three. (soft upbeat music) Nicely done, I mean you
could see that really slippy exit there, keep going Chris! Keep going, really slippy exit. Not quite enough momentum. That’s a five unfortunately
for Chris Smith. (soft upbeat music) (laughing) Okay let’s have a go on
this bike Chris, what gear? First gear. – [Chris] Third. – Third gear? I don’t think third’s a good idea. Really, third gear? (soft upbeat music) Yeah boy, it’s not the
gearing, it’s not the grip. That was just as easy, to e-bikes, have they (mumbles) differently? Kind of, but then not really. (soft upbeat music) Okay, second lap. – [Chris] Watch that greasy bit. – [Steve] It’s all greasy. – [Chris] Whoa! – That’s a double clean. – [Chris] No way, you hit that last call. – No I didn’t hit ground,
I got to the log man, it’s the right route, that’s double clean. – This is a little known
fact that Steve Jones actually won a national
motor bike trial competition. – [Steve] (laughing)
That was 30 years ago. – Yeah, what when you were 20? Right. – [Steve] Hard innit? That’s a five. – Pedal in the back of the ankle there. (soft upbeat music) – Probably not been your bag today. – No. – I mean there’s been the
mountains, there’s been tire pressure there’s been my
(bleep), there’s been the grips, there’s been no end of excuses today, but I tell you what, I’m feeling generous. I’ll give you one mark,
I’ll drop one mark, for every foot you can
hit off that step there. I mean that is totally not my cup of tea. – So I gotta go as big
as that and then if I get six foot you give me six points? – Yeah. – If I go 100 foot you give
me 100 points, and I win. – If you go 100 feet
there’s flat land in there. – That’s alright. – Alright then. We’ve got one more hill climb to do. Before we get into that,
so you might be into half century figures by then. – Let’s get into it then, yeah? – You need to make sure that
you clean this last section. (soft upbeat music) – [Chris] Clean the section? – [Steve] Easy, easy (laughing) Go for the low gear approach
sat down, which is different to Chris’s approach today. Oh it is slippy. So I’m shifting my body
weight, slowing it down as you go around that corner,
feathering the back break and then yet more
annihilation to Chris Smith. (soft upbeat music) So here goes Chris Smith’s flat landing to win the trials challenge. – Not the flat.
– Chris be careful please. We wanna do more of this. – [Chris] That’s the
best I could go on that. – Chris Smith pulls back 18 marks. – Minus what 15? – 18. – Minus 18? – [Steve] 18 marks. – So what’s that,
annihilation in the end then? – Good day.
– Yeah. (mumbles) Just shows you what good fun
you can have on these bikes. Whatever terrain, anything you can find, make a little comp out. – The secret Chris Smith
step one was the Michelin super tacky wellies
which get you anywhere, but Chris more e-bike challenges,
you’ve done loads right? – Yeah loads. – The rock, check out the rock. – We got the slab as well,
our first epic climb. Check that one and check that one out too. – But it doesn’t need to
be as ridiculous as that, you can have fun anywhere
in the woods on your e-bike, so, let us know your thoughts
on our trials challenge. – Drop us some comments in the box below, give us a thumbs up if you’ve enjoyed the video, don’t forget to subscribe to EMBN. – And also, don’t forget to send your commiserations to Chris Smith. – Yeah, sorry about that guys. I’ll redeem myself, street challenge, trial
challenge, coming up. – Yeah.
