Review: Xtracycle Edgerunner 10E Electric Bike

Hey, I’m Karen at The New Wheel, and I am
here with the Xtracycle Edgerunner 10E. It’s the new electric bike from Xtracycle. Now
Xtracycle’s right across the Bay, we work very closely with them and have really enjoyed
the partnership. We’ve always believed that the way to get families out of cars and onto
bikes in San Francisco is to get a mid-drive reliable electric bike and the combination
of Bosch and Xtracycle really makes that happen. So today I’ll share with you some of the details,
some of the features that I think riders really appreciate on this bike and hopefully I’ll
compel you to come in and try it with your family to see how this bike can change your
future. The Xtracycle Edgerunner is designed around a platform that allows the cargo to
be as low as possible. The rear wheel which is hidden, is actually 20 inches, it’s like
a kids bike wheel, and what that does is that it brings down the center of gravity, and
increases the amount of torque that you have when climbing up a hill. So it’s a genius
design. You basically have a narrow profile bike that allows you to carry two kids, even
if they’re pretty darn big. Now that combined with a rigged and well thought through steel
frame design, some thicker top tubing here which makes the bike feel really stable, means
that you are going to be really comfortable handling heavy loads in urban environments.
The bike comes standard with the deck, two bags, and a center kickstand. And that makes
the bike useable right away. Now if you’re going to put a family on the back, you’ll
want the family kit, and that includes the hooptie and u-tubes. The hooptie is designed
to protect your passengers from the side and gives them a new squishy spot to hold on,
and their hands won’t get too cold. The U-Tube is a foot rail; for kids with longer legs
they’re going to place their feet right on there. If your kids are under four, they’re
probably going to need a Yepp seat which fits right in to the deck of the bike. This thing
back here, this is called a Magic Carpet and it’s designed for kids who aren’t in Yepp
seats anymore. You can use one right across the top of the deck, or two that come up on
the sides kind of maximum comfort, and it really allows kids to just sit there, be relaxed
and enjoy their time on the bike as well. The Edgerunner uses hydraulic disc brakes
from Shimano,w hich means that your control going down a hill is excellent. The drivetrain
is a combination of the Bosch motor and a Shimano Deore 10 speed derailleur at the back.
The Edgerunner 10E comes standard with Big Apple tires. They’re what are called balloon
tires, and they look big but they’re fantastic for the urban environment. They’ll give you
a little bit of suspension if you ride them with a bit lower pressure, and they are puncture
proof, so you’ll have great protection and a comfortable ride all over the place. The
Bosch motor is super high torque. It’s the most reliable motor system in the market,
the Bosch motor system will bring you to about 20 mph at the top. Depending on how you’re
using the bike between 20 and 40 miles to a charge on this nice compact 400 watt hour
battery. It’s one of the smallest form factors in the market and it’s easy to take on and
off the bike, meaning that you can charge in your apartment or at work. It’s very easy
to handle. The cockpit on the Xtracycle is designed to be comfortable, simple, and easy
to use. It centers on the Bosch console which really gives you the information that you
need to know, it will give you your speed, your range. The plus and minus button super
easy to reach. Now this becomes really important when you need a little bit more of a boost
in short order or something like that. On your right hand side you’ll have your shifters,
thumb is easy, pointer finger is hard. There’s no complex thinking about shifting it is super
super simple and streamlined. At The New Wheel we only carry one multi-child cargo bike:
the Xtracycle Edgerunner and there is a real reason for that. We understand that when you’re
choosing to transport your kids by bike, you need to be able to get from point A to point
B reliably and safely and happily. This bike is designed towards all of those ends and
it’s a great investment because the Bosch motor system is supported by one of the biggest
companies in the ebike market and they take support incredibly seriously. This is the
cargo bike that you can trust for use with your family and as a great investment for
the future. So get out of your car, come to The New Wheel we’ll get you set up, we’ll
go out with you and show you how to be safe and have fun with your family getting from
point A to point B without a car. The city is so much better when you do it that way.
