Review: Tern GSD Electric Bike

Hi. My name is Karen Wiener,
at The New Wheel, in San Francisco and Marin County. And I am here today with the
Tern GSD, a super cool 20-inch get stuff done bicycle. The design of the GSD is
a slightly surprising turn for a company like Tern, who has specialized
in folding bikes to this point. Really, there are no folds In this frame.
It is a non-folding cargo bike. So, why did Tern make this?
The first thing is that as a folding bicycle company, and especially
as an urban folding bicycle company, they always are thinking about solutions
to urban problems. Secondly, as a company, they know how to do a lot with accessories
in a very small amount of space. And, lastly, as a Taiwanese company,
they can make all the parts that are needed to make a fully functional
cargo bike right out of a gate. After thinking about this, and after
kind of mulling over how the GSD sits in the legacy of cargo bikes that
are out there, we realized that Tern is actually a company that is uniquely
qualified to build a bike that fits in your life. So it’s really fun to think
about the Tern GSD as like two columns. You’ve got cargo bike problems,
GSD solutions. Big problem number one, cargo bikes are big. Well, the Tern GSD,
is not that big even though it’s got tons of functionality. Tern has managed to
design a bike that’s under six feet long. It’s a bike that, actually,
is exactly the same length as a normal bike. That means you can
store it in the same amount of space that you can store your mountain bike
or your city bike. It’s unbelievable. It’s also designed so that you can
actually tilt it onto its back to store it in the garage, or to get it into an
elevator. The handlebars and seat fold down. So, if you want to be
able to fit it in the back of your car, you actually can. Problem number two,
“My family might grow out of this bike.” Well, on the Tern GSD,
there are so many options for family riding, but it’s going to be a
long time before your family grows out of this one. Problem number
three, “I live on a steep hill. I need to be able to climb the hill and
descend safely.” This bike has got you covered in that department.
If you’ve never tried an ebike that has really seamless and well-designed assist,
you’re going to be impressed by this one. This system really gives you
what you want when you need it. So, the combination of the Bosch
Performance Line Motor with the simple Purion display and a plus and minus
button right at your thumb tip mean that you get as much power
as you want when you need it. But you’re overwhelmed with power.
It feels like you’re just a super strong rider, and you can go anywhere.
Now, in terms of descending, brakes are the key thing that matter.
Tern has opted to use a four-piston MT5 Magura brake. This is a brake that is
built for heavy-duty urban use so that you can descend confidently with your whole
family in tow, or just lots and lots of stuff, and always feel like you’re
in control and having a good time. Problem number four, range. “So,
I’m carrying a bunch of stuff, and I don’t have enough battery power to
get where I need to go. What do I do?” The GSD has the ultimate solution.
Built onboard is the Bosch Tool Battery Solution, meaning that you
can opt to buy a second battery, and the two batteries will work in tandem,
and it will double your range so that you can go anywhere, with any amount of
weight, and any amount of assistance. The bike comes standard with fenders,
a double kickstand, and front and rear lights. The bike comes in
three colors, a kind of dark blue, a bright blue, and this construction
orange. At The New Wheel, we’ll work with you to understand what
your needs are, and how this bike could best be set up for you. The key
decisions will be in which accessories will be best suited to your
needs. We’ll work with you to figure out what you need and what you don’t.
There are options for footrest, and bars that go around your kids when
they’re out of their Yepp seats. There’s a front rack for when you want
panniers on the front but not the basket. Or you can have nothing on the front
at all. It goes on, and on, and on. So, if you’re a person who wants to
get stuff done with an electric bike, you’ve got to come and try the Tern GSD.
It’s a bike that we’ve been waiting for for a really, really long time. And I
know that you’re going to be excited to see how it might fit into your life. ♪ [music] ♪
