Review: Stromer ST5 – The New Swiss Super Ebike

Hi. I’m Brett from the New Wheel Electric
Bike shop in San Francisco and Marin. And today, I’m in Switzerland. I’m
at the Stromer Campus in Oberwangen, and I’m here on the production
line of the brand new Stromer ST5. I’ve come, here, to Switzerland to test
ride the new ST5, take it around the Swiss countryside, and tell you about it.
And the first thing I can say is it’s absolutely unbelievable. It’s a
whole new class of electric bike. Stromer has always been about building
bikes that look good and are fast. The ST5 is the culmination of this idea.
So at its core, the ST5 is built on the same ST2 platform that came out a few
years ago. And that’s a really good thing because this is a tried and true platform.
Now, there are some key differences. Number one thing is this is a
new motor, it offers more torque. So normally, it’s rated at 48 Newton
meters, up from 40 Newton meters, a better heat capacity,
and stronger performance. And you really notice that when you ride
it. There’s something else going on here. You would think that the ST2 is the most
powerful bike that you’ve ever ridden until you try the ST5. Now,
obviously, the motor is a key component to the new ride-feel of the ST5,
but just as important is the new geometry, wheel size, and some of the components
that Stromer has chosen to build this bike up with. Another evolution on the
ST2 platform is the new OMNI. The OMNI is a color display, it has
a brand new software engineering, which makes it much faster,
has a better cellular connection, Bluetooth, and a lot of new cool features
that are here now and are going to be iterated on as time goes on.
One of the first things that you’ll notice when you look at a ST5 is the
fully integrated handlebar. This is unlike any other bike on the
market because you don’t see any cable on housing, it all runs in the frame.
Built in to the bar is an integrated phone mount that you can attach your phone to,
and then both use it as a secondary display or for directions, which
you’ll also notice is the Di2 electronic shifter on the right-hand side,
and a new horn which is a requirement in Europe, but is also super handy in the
US. The drive train is the top-level, Shimano XTR drive train, it’s
electronic so it doesn’t have a cable running from the handlebar,
and it’s precise, it’s crisp, it’s just a beautiful thing to ride,
and it really matches the performance of this whole bike. To top it off, as a
commuter bike like this, one thing you don’t want to have to do is come
in for service so often, you want to be able to be out on the road and stay
out there for thousands of miles. And the electronic shifting really lives
up to that, it doesn’t need the sort of adjustment that you do on a standard
cable derailleur. Once it’s set up nicely and properly, it’ll stay for years
to come. This is a brand new wheel size for Stromer, it’s always been 26 inch.
And what 27 and half inch allows is for just a better ride feel. And most
important to this is the new collaboration between Pirelli and Stromer.
This tire is exclusive to Stromer for the next year, and it’s unlike any other
bicycle tire on the market. Now, Pirelli is a company that is
well-known and beloved in the motorsports world, they make high-end
tires that are tuned for specific performance characteristics.
This tire is designed for an e-bike, it’s designed for a speed
e-bike. When you take a turn, it’s incredibly agile. And you
can take turns at much higher speeds and feel safe and secure.
Another first for Stromer is that this is the first keyless e-bike. You
eject your battery by pressing a button on the display,
and then press the button on the side. This is great for security and it’s great
because you just don’t have to have another key on your keychain.
Like all self-respecting commuter bikes, the ST5 comes standard with integrated
lighting, fenders, a kickstand, and a chain guard which keeps
your jeans and your pants clean. The front light is spectacular,
you should have total confidence going superfast at the dark of night,
in the darkest places. And the rear light makes it clear that
you’re there for all traffic behind you. Stromer has a brand new brake set for this
bike, it’s a custom brake made for Stromer. It has a four-piston design
for incredible braking performance, and it really pops on the bike.
The ST5 comes in 3 sizes, 17 inch, 20 inch, and 22 inch.
It’s 3 sizes that will fit riders anywhere
from about 5’2 up to 6 foot 5 or 6. So who is the ST5 for? If you
are looking for an electric vehicle that happens to be a bicycle,
then this is your next bike. I’ve never ridden an electric bike that
performs quite like an ST5, it’s fast, it’s confidence inspiring,
and it looks so darn cool. It’s been so inspiring to be here at the
Stromer campus to learn about what Stromer is doing to see the vision,
and to try the ST5. This is the live division, this is the e-bike that is
the ultimate car killer. It’s faster. It’s more fun, and it just feels like a
vehicle. So the sad part is that we’re leaving, and the ST5 is staying
here. But it will be coming soon, so you’re going to want to take this bike
on a spin. It’s unlike any other e-bike you’ve ever ridden, it’s got to be ridden
to be believed. We’re super happy to have had the opportunity to try this,
and we look forward to bringing this to the San Francisco Bay area so that you
can have the Stromer drive experience on a whole new level. ♪ [music] ♪
