Hi I’m Karen Wiener from The New Wheel in San Francisco. Today to you the 2014 Kalkhoff Agattu i8. It’s an ebike that brings together many of the best qualities of electric bikes: In that it is exceptionally comfortable, and it has ultimate utility. To best understand it’s great to know a bit about Kalkhoff and Derby Cycle, Kalkhoff’s parent company. It’s also really useful to know a little bit more about the Impulse mid-drive motor system. So today I’ll talk about Kalkhoff I’ll talk about the impulse mid-drive system and I’ll tell you a little bit about what makes this One of the most popular bicycles at The New Wheel Kalkhoff is the largest manufacturer of high quality electric bikes in Europe The company was founded in 1919 by Heinrich Kalkhoff in Cloppenburg which is a small town in Northern Germany And in fact the bicycles are still manufactured there They began introducing ebikes to the market in 2005. And in 2012 they were acquired by a major automotive manufacturer and distributor called Pon Holdings So the company has an enormous amount of resources To develop this technology. And they also have the history To really be able to build a high quality bicycle The impulse mid-drive motor system Is owned and developed by Derby Cycles which is the parent company of Kalkhoff, Focus Bicycles and a variety of other brands in Europe This year they introduced the Impulse 2.0. Which is Which is the same great mid-drive motor system but has a few important improvements and developments The main feature is a shift sensor which is located right here on the shifter cable right inside the frame and it actually pauses the motor for 300 milliseconds as you shift What this essentially does is makes shifting really easy Additionally they’ve made a few improvements to the motor. They’ve increased torque to 80 newton meters and they reduced the amount of noise that comes out of the motor. You’ve got an LCD screen which will give you your speed your distance Your basic trip information. A backlit thumb controller: turn on the bicycle, turn the levels up and down. And exceptionally high capacity batteries. So here on this Agattu we’ve got a 540 watt hour battery which will give you up to 70 miles of realistic riding range up and down hills. We’ve though a lot about what makes the Agattu such a hit here at The New Wheel; And I think it comes down to the way the bike is put together: It’s put together with comfort and serious urban utility in mind. The bicycle has a variety of comfort features So the saddle is really comfortable. It’s got seat post suspension and front fork suspension And also a very upright posture Which isn’t like a couch, but is kind of erect and enables you to see traffic around you And to keep your back and shoulders really comfortable. Secondly the bike uses really high quality parts. So everything from the Schwalbe tires which will keep you from getting a flat around town, to the Magura hydraulic rim brakes and the Nexus internally geared hub Just make for really smooth operation. The bike comes standard with all the features that you need for use around town. So it has front and rear lights which run off of a hub dynamo A rack, fenders and even a little rear wheel lock Which is a little quant in San Francisco, but can by super useful. Brett says comfort is king; well this bicycle is certainly royalty. The Agattu is a great all round electric bike: it’s comfortable it can climb anything – in fact anyone can pretty much climb anything on this bike. It’s got phenomenal range. And it comes in a variety of frame sizes It will fit anyone from about five feet tall all the way past six feet somewhere up there. It is available in step-through and a diamond frame. It’s a bike that you should try If you’re curious come on in We do test rides everyday, and a test ride is really the best way to understand what this technology can do for you. I look forward to it. Thank you so much for watching
