Review: Gazelle Arroyo C8 Electric Bike

Hi, I’m Brett from The New Wheel.
We are an electric bike retailer in San Francisco and Marin and this is the new
Gazelle Arroyo. In the Netherlands, this bike is not called the Arroyo,
it’s called the Orange and it’s basically the national bicycle of the
Netherlands. You’ll see it everywhere. You go to Amsterdam, Utrecht,
this is the bike that you’ll see. It’s your classic Dutch bike.
It’s just a joy to ride. It’s very comfortable,
puts you in a really nice position. You’re able to look around, enjoy the
ride, and with electric assist you can go anywhere.
On your classic Dutch bike that’s not always the case. It’s great for the
pancake-flat Netherlands, but when you bring it to a place like San Francisco,
kind of a bear up the hills. They’ve always had this bike outfitted
with a Bosch motor. For this year they’ve upgraded the motor to the new performance
line Bosch motor. So, you get more torque, more power for the hills.
The Gazelle Arroyo is equipped with a Shimano Nexus 8-speed internally-geared
hub. All the gears are enclosed, and the benefit of this is it’s very low
maintenance. It’s super simple operation. You can shift gears at any time,
you can be at a stoplight and shift to the right gear to get going again, and the
gear range is very wide. So you have a really nice low gear for climbing even the
steepest hills, and a really high, high gear for cruising on the flats.
So one very important component of a bike like the Arroyo is making it fit for you.
This year there’s added improvements and the number one thing is the new Magura
HS22 brakes. Magura brakes are hydraulic rim brakes. They’re fantastic. And for
this year there’s an addition of a reach adjust feature. So basically, the New
Wheel can help you adjust the brake lever so that they really fit your hand nicely
and you have a very confident braking power all the time. In addition,
there’s still the patented Gazelle stem. This stem is quick adjustable so
you can really easily find just the right ride position on the fly and
adjust it for different rider heights. There’s front suspension which is nicely
integrated in the fork, but there’s also seat post suspension which you can dial in
to match your weight and give you just the right amount of cush for the ride.
What hasn’t changed for this year is the frame, which was redesigned in 2017.
This frame is stiffer than the Arroyos of the past. It’s really
clean, it’s very elegant, all the welds are polished.
It looks amazing. Arroyo has always been a really good-looking bike.
When you see it coming at you on the street, you can tell that it’s an Arroyo.
In the past you had your choice of every color, as long as it was black.
Not any longer. Now we have this sort of raw aluminum look, we have a nice
bright blue color, and then we have the classic Dutch black.
Like all self-respecting city bikes, this bike comes fully equipped
for daily use. So lights, fenders, the fully enclosed chain guard.
This is a maintenance-free setup and really keeps everything very clean and out
of your world and more on the shop side. The rear rack is not just an off-the-shelf
rack that they stick on the bike. It’s built right into the frame so it adds
stiffness and rigidity, and it looks really good. And it has built-in
straps as well so you can carry, you know, a newspaper or, you know,
a jacket with you. It also has a built-in cafe lock, which is a very nice casual
lock. Not your primary defense mode in a place like San Francisco, but a nice
additional defense. And also, if you’re just at the cafe and you’re sitting with
your bike, you just lock it and you can feel secure in that. If you are looking
for a really comfortable, very upright ride position bicycle, you should
seriously take the Gazelle Arroyo for a spin. It’s one of the most
comfortable bikes that I’ve ever ridden. It’s a subtle thing, what makes a bike
comfortable, but you know it when you try it. And when you take the Arroyo out,
everyone comes back telling us how much they loved the ride feel. Come on in.
We have the Arroyo available for test riding. We’ll set you up,
get it adjusted for the fit that you’re looking for, and we’ll go out on a ride
with you. I know you’ll really enjoy it. ♪ [music] ♪
