OhioHealth Bike Clinic-Learn to Ride Better

My name is Darren Wright and I’m a
family physician sports medicine specialist here at OhioHealth. So the
first thing I do is I sit down with everybody, go through their injury issues.
Whether they have any current injuries, injuries in the past and we look at what
their goals are. So we see a lot of knee hip injury issues related to bike fit so
sometimes it’s just a simple adjustment in the bike that can take some pressure
off a knee injury and eliminate the pain they’ve been experiencing. I came to OhioHealth for the bike clinic to help me prepare for Ironman. That’s coming up
for me in just a few short months and I need to get better at biking. And it’s
everything from: is my seat the right height, are my handle bars where they
should be, how are my legs performing, am I using
all the muscles or am I just using some of the calf muscles and I think the
bikers clinic is really going to help me go faster and be able to make it through
that long Ironman race. So bike fits are really important. I think a lot of people
just kind of go to the store and want to buy a bike but really just like shoes, it’s
important to get a bike that’s made for you. The number one thing we’re looking for is
satellite. Whether it’s up, down, for or aft. It’s also one of the most adjustable
things on the bike so we can adjust the cockpit. We can adjust the knee extension. We can help get a neutral back. All that can happen from the bike. At how far
should my foot be going down on the pedal. What angle should it be coming to and it
was great to sit on the bike, do it, go look at the video immediately
there afterwards, and then make a few adjustments and get back on the bike and
do it again. Then from there we meet a physical therapist who does a strength
and flexibility assessment looking for any imbalances and weaknesses that
might predispose any type of an injury. Then meet with a sports nutritionist who
kind of reviews through a nutritional plan, whether it’s about the race day or even
you know outside of racing. It’s general nutrition. We’re really just trying to put it
all together find that simple piece of the puzzle
that really brings it all together. Today what I was really hoping to get
and I think I’ve received is being able to take my training, not just from
training from race to race, but making it more of a lifestyle. You know you’re not
just training for the next event but you’re training every day and by doing that I want to work into the triathlon. yeah
