OCLV Mountain ft. Cam McCaul

I’m Cam McCaul, and I think it’s about time we talk about carbon fiber. We all know that carbon is lighter than aluminum. In addition, carbon can maintain or improve the strength and stiffness needed by high performance bicycles. It’s the miracle material for bikes. But will a carbon bike withstand mountain biking abuse? It will if it’s Trek OCLV MTB. Riding in loose debris is a lot of fun, but it puts your bike in harm’s way. Rocks and other rubbish on the trail can kick up into downtube and seatstays. So we developed OCLV Mountain as a stronger, more durable carbon construction specifically for mountain bikes. To develop OCLV Mountain, Trek’s engineers developed a methodology to ensure our frames were up to the challenge. We call it Retained Strength. By employing different composite materials in unique layups specifically in the high damage areas of the downtube and seatstays, Trek’s engineers have created frames more durable than their aluminum counterparts. We utilize an anvil strike test. It’s a sharp 150 gram anvil sent hurtling at the frame at 38 miles per hour. This is an aluminum frame. The anvil strikes the frame and creates a surface dent. After further testing the frame becomes unrideable. Now we test a standard carbon frame. The anvil hits the frame and it cracks. During further testing these cracks spread making it unrideable. Now we test our OCLV Mountain frame. When the anvil strikes, the laminate shows distress, but after further testing the frame does not fail. The distress is only cosmetic and the bike is as good as new. This is Retained Strength. Not leaving good enough alone, we go one step further with Carbon Armor. Carbon Armor is a highly refined elastomer on the underside of the downtube designed to slow down and distribute the force of an impact to the frame. Carbon Armor keeps your frame looking fresh and you feeling more confident to charge a little harder on the trail. In addition, Trek stands behind every bike that bears our name. The first Trek hand-welded over forty years ago is still under warranty. So go on and confidently ride your carbon Trek through roughest, nastiest trails you can find. Trek’s OCLV Mountain is purpose-built to withstand the rigors of mountain biking with a warranty to back it up.
