Measure A Unicorn Bike/Broadway & 3rd Street Bike Lane Unveiling

After months of building, paving, and painting the city of Long Beach invited the community to an event that showcase recently completed Measure A funded infrastructure improvements in downtown on Broadway and 3rd Street. Really excited to be here this morning to celebrate the opening really official kind of opening dedication of our new bike lanes that are dedicated up and down across the downtown and across Broadway. After the official ribbon-cutting Mayor Garcia led attendees on a Measure A improvement bike tour that provided the opportunity to try out the new arterial bike lanes, explore the Bixby Park Community Center upgrades, observed new sidewalk and ADA access improvements, and see the new beautiful staircase installed at the City Place parking garage that provides better and safer access into Harvey Milk Promenade Park. Whenever we do a paving project we’re always looking to make sure that we’re addressing any sidewalk needs, any new curbs and gutters that may need to be installed, curb ramps for ADA accessibility, and then bike lanes if it’s if a corridor is part of our master bike plan then we add bike lanes. This Complete Street approach is one way the city is expanding its bicycle infrastructure and the numbers on the newly installed Eco-Totem which counts pedestrians and cyclists as they pass and firm that growth. Another important part of the bicycle network is the Long Beach bike share program. During the celebration two new additions were introduced to the fleet, the Measure A unicorn bikes. So the reason we’re doing this is obviously to celebrate the different Measure A projects around the city as well as a thank you from Measure A to the community. If you spot a Measure A bike around the city use your bike share plan to take it for a spin, snap a selfie along the way and tag it with #MeasureABike and #MeasureA.
