Martyn Ashton’s Trials Academy Ep. 4

Martyn Ashton’s Trials Academy Ep. 4

Hello, and welcome to the
Ashton Trials Academy, episode and lesson number four. In this episode, I’m going
to have Neil and Blake concentrate on balance. Now these guys are gettin’
really good at trials, but remember, they’re ex-professional
racers and freeriders. They’ve got some serious skills. But don’t let that put you off
trying some of these things, because there’s basics in trials that are going to make
you have a lot of fun, because trials is great, but also improve your trail-riding, and today, the balance focus
that we’re going to have is going to mean that these guys
are going to have to concentrate on their focus, really making
sure they hold their line, and to keep it interesting, I’m going to make it a bit of a contest, so the loser has to
pay a bit of a penalty. And along the way, I’m
going to be making things a little bit more difficult. Squirty cream anyone? (funky techno music) On it and stop. Oh, nearly! Oh.
– [Neil] Oh, wow. – [Martin] Oh, what?
– [Neil] That was trials! Balance, eh Martin? – [Martin] Yeah, balance, balance. Nice, Blake! Nice. Right, okay. Guys, gather in, let’s let’s start the contest. – Contest? – As you can see, these boys
have been practicin’ on, this is a great little
obstacle to start on, a skate park obstacle. Nice little wall, if you like, if you’ve got somethin’
in your local street area, that could work, but now, I’m going to
put you both to the test. – A test?
– Test, right. And I’m going to be awarding
a winner to each area we ride that is basically going
to be centered around balancing along something that bikes wouldn’t
necessarily ride along. – That sounds like something you would do. – It does, doesn’t it?
– Sweet. Is there a reward, is it? – Let’s, there’s no
rewards, only punishments in trials, I’m afraid. – So there’s no carrots, just sticks. – Just sticks.
– Just sticks? – And I’m going to be
beating them with you. Let’s go over to the first section, this log behind, and see
who can ride along it best, out of Neil and Blake. – Blake!
– [Blake] Yeah? – Blake!
– [Blake] Yeah! – Come up the stairs. – Oh, right, yeah. – Okay, this is the first obstacle, nice big beefy log, these things are perfect
for balancing situations. They’re nice and wide, but because they’ve got
a curved top, actually your riding line is actually very small. Neil and Blake are going
to struggle with this one. It’s the first section. The line in’s difficult, they’ve got to duck under some trees, so I’m not making it easy. You’ve got to make it
all the way along, lads, and get out past the little
knobble in the tree just there that I’m going to mark. And off to either side you choose, but basically you’ve got
to get past this tree. – Well, there you go, past that tree. – Sounds like spin ’til you lose. – Best of luck, who’s going first? – I’ll go first! – Neil’s up first, let’s see how they do. I’m getting out the way. So, I want you to ride, oh, Neil, you’re coming in already? You’re coming, not yet! Not yet, you’re too, too eager! How do you squirt squirty cream? Oh, I see, through there, through there. Okay, there ya go. You guys, I’ve marked the
section in squirty cream. That’s the gates you’ve
got to get through. A little wasp just come
down and straight away (high pitched tongue clicks) D-d-d-die Martin! I’m there, I’m there. – [Blake] Go on Neil. – Yes, nice, very nice. – [Blake] That’s too easy.
– [Martin] And through! – Genius first go. – Neil’s going to be hard to beat [Neil] I can’t wait to do it again. He’s a very concentrated fella. Here comes Blake. Blake’s nailing it (Blake chuckles) Wow, I’m going to have to try much harder – [Blake] You got to go
manual wheely across it, yeah. – [Neil] Whoa, whoa! – Nice, hold it, hold it! Ah, nice exit, nice exit. That was good skills there. See how he realized he was going and he committed to the
drop rather than panicking. That’s really important. Go on Blake! What the hell? (laughs) – [Martin] What the hell? Go on Neil, watch out for whoops – [Neil] No – Oh! Let them get confident. I knew this would happen
and I came prepared. Carry on lads, keep riding. Oh no, it’s raining. Like I said with trials, it’s all about making
sure that you concentrate, you don’t get distracted. Come on then. – Oh what’s that? What
are you doing Martin? – Oh no the squirty thing’s broke. – Oh! (laughs) – Oh my squirty gun is useless! (indistinct chatter) Wait, wait a minute. – [Blake] Just what
are you trying to stop? – [Neil] Yeah? When you start moving
to one side, that’s it. – Oh that is hard (laughs) – That works – [Blake] I don’t know, that was scary. – [Neil] Yeah Oh, oh, oh! (laughs) – [Blake] Ohhh! – So now the challenge has evolved on this first section. And they are trying to stop
on the log and then carry on. Which is very difficult. (laughs) If one of them does this,
I will give them a win. – [Blake] Come on, you’ve go
to start from the beginning. – Lads, if one of you manages to ride along this log, stop, and carry on, the first person who does
that, wins this section. – [Blake] First person? Watch this Neil. I’ve been practicing. – He’s managed to stop. Hello. – Oh! (laughs) – This is a fun game. – [Neil] What grip is left? That’s my excuse. – Come on, you could
take this first section. – [Blake] Hit that one real good – [Martin] Was that a stop? – [Camera Man] That was a stop, right? – [Blake] Stop! Stop! – [Martin] Oh nearly! – [Camera Man] That counted, that counted! – [Blake] That didn’t
count, you didn’t stop. – It didn’t make the end gates. He didn’t make the end gates
and that’s trials man, sorry. Here comes Blake. – This is a stop. – Definite stop. – Oh, oooh!
– [Martin] Ahhh! He’s done it! He done it, Neil this is your last chance. Neil, this is your last
chance to stay even. – [Blake] I did it Neil. – [Martin] Go on Neil. – [Blake] Start stepping
– [Neil] Ahhh! – [Martin] So win for
Blake on Log number 1! (crowd cheering) Blake flying straight through
by the skin of his teeth Wha- Tell us what you’re thinking? – I’m thinking, I’m not going
to tell him, because he… – Are you going to try to
go slow and pedal up it? ‘Cause that bit is really round. – Yeah – I think if you get, you don’t
want to go too fast on that, that’s really wobbly. That’s like a real rickety bridge in the Amazon Forest that’s
been there for years. – Lads, can I tell you what I think? – What’s that? – Um, whether it’s relevant or not, but I think the thing I
would be concentrating on is that you need to
drive yourself up there, so what I’d be thinking about is where is your front wheel going to be when you want to put the power down? So, I would think about rolling down here with the natural momentum of the ground, letting it take you
through that little dip and start to go up the other side, and then at that point, you
need to be on your right- good foot forward and drive it up there and just keep pedaling it out. – Yeah – ‘Cause once you stop
pedaling, that’s it, you’re off. – Off, right. Let’s have a go. – Off, literally off. – I think you’ve got
this Neil, I really do. Go on fellas. (laughs) – Oh, I just covered myself in cream. Whose idea was it bringing cream? – [Neil] Good. – [Martin] Oh, nearly. – [Blake] Ohh! – That’s not good. Neil seems to have the right kind of tension in him to get this. He’s very acutely aware
that it’s difficult. I think that’s what you need
to make this one happen. Go on Neil, quick. Go on, pedal it. Oh! That was it, that was it Neil. You guys are thinking about
power now and not about balance. Remember, this is about balance. Come on Blake, it’s high
tension at this moment, in the trial score. This guy’s got a win. Blake’s on line
– [Neil] Ahh, he’s done it. – He’s on line, he’s got it, yes! – [Neil] He’s got it. – [Blake] Yes! – Well done! – [Blake] Balance, balance!
– Go on Neil! Come on Neil! Come on. Yes, yes, yes! Amazing, it’s a draw on this one, I think. – [Blake] Wow this is… – So come into me lads. – Nice job!
– Okay so we need to- You both nailed that and
this is not an easy section, I’m very impressed, but we need
a result because this is a- – We could go from the other way – No! No, Blake, Neil – Yeah, my name’s Neil
– Neil, Blake – Your new challenge is
you must ride the log with a mouthful of cream and you are not allowed to swallow it until you exit the other
side of the log or fall off. (chuckles) Who’s going first? – I’ll go first, I like
the taste of this cream, that’s not good. – We’re going to get fat by the
time we finish, well fatter. (air leaving can) – You got to tilt it – Oh yeah, okay, I get ya,
I’m not a cream expert. Don’t swallow that cream – [Camera Man] It’s gone already – [Neil] It’s just going to go (slurping) – Yeah, it doesn’t matter. (laughs) (mumbling) – [Martin] He’s done it,
he totally got it done eh. – [Camera Man] Oh Neil, I feel for you. (laughs) – So much! He’s got so much in there. – (mumbling) – That’s so good – [Martin] Come on Neil, hold that cream, concentrate, balance. – [Blake] Speed. – [Martin] He’s more than too good. Swallow! Oh I always knew you would. (laughs) Well done, that’s a draw on that one. We’re going into our final
section for a decider because these boys just
can’t be beaten on this one even with cream distractions,
but I’ve got one last log to push them to the limit. Can Blake take the win?
Or can Neil draw it even? Remember there is a penalty
to pay if you don’t win this. Neil, I reckon it’s fair to say you’re allowed to lean on that – It’s f-ing sharp – Is it?
– Is it? Not what you want to lean on? – Should we go for it? Can we do it? – If it’s not the right one,
we’ll find something else. – [Neil] No, I’mma just try it. – [Blake] Try it. – [Neil] Yep. – [Blake] Yeah. What you’re on it’s- that was hard. – Squirty cream like this is the exit, you’ve got to get past
this piece, and this piece. – [Blake] Right
– This is your exit. – If you make it past
the tree, that’s good eh? Front wheel through that?
Does it matter about the back? First one to get to the
cream is the winner. – So front wheel come through
or both wheels through? – Um, if your get your front wheel, a- front axle out of the hole,
out of the gates, you’re out. – [Blake] Let’s try it Neil.
– [Neil] Fuck yeah – [Blake] This is gnarly,
this is very gnarly. – This is hard, this is a
hard log, this is harder – [Blake] Aw this is
actually quite hard Neil – It’s got an awful lot about it… – I know you don’t need your bar past it – [Martin] … that’s very
unattractive and scary – [Blake] Oh – Neil’s nervous – [Blake] Do you want
to, should I try first? – [Neil] Will you try first? – Blake’s excited, he can see the win. – [Blake] Either, or, we’re
going to be here a while – We’re not sure how this
one is going to play out – [Neil] That’s for sure – But what I am going
to do is move back a bit because I don’t think they know either. I think I’m safe here. It looks pretty scary
from here doesn’t it? Who’s your money on, Nick? – [Nick] Neil – I think Neil might have this. Yeah. So Neil needs to win this,
or else it’s a win for Blake – Neil are you filling in holes? – [Martin] No, it’s a draw – Neil is filling a hole – [Martin] Neil needs to win
this because then it’s a draw. – Should we try it? – [Martin] And they can maybe
avoid the, uh, punishments, the forfeits if they don’t make this. Well here comes Blake, first go. Oh he’s not, he’s not going to do it. Nope, he’s taking too much time. No, you’re going to have to
come on with some movement, you’re going to have to
come on with some movement. That’s really hard. – [Neil] Go! – Lets see how long it
takes them to work out that they need to go on to
it with a bit of movement, ‘Cause if you ride up there and stop, you’ve got to balance
yourself all over again. You might do it, but you’re
making it a lot harder, this needs momentum. And I think Neil always uses momentum. See what he’s doing? Now he didn’t make it, but
it looked much more doable. If he works out his line
in, he might get it. Blake’s changed his tactic already, he’s already saw what Neil would done and he’s learning from it. It is a little bit of a,
little bit of a game of chess, because it’s going to be
watching each other as they do it and see what’s working. Here comes Neil, with a lot
more momentum this time. (laughs) And he’s off, he’s off. – [Blake] Scare you did it?
– [Neil] Yeah – Blake’s being very
casual about his line in and it’s too casual. Neil’s coming in with a lot of focus – [Blake] Has the wrong foot forward. Right, that’s it. – Watch Neil’s run up as he comes in now. – [Neil] Watch this. – [Martyn] He’s ready, no no, no, they’ve got to get that first bit. – They think about the log too much and not the bit they’ve got to ride up – Oh boy (laughs) – [Blake] Go ahead Neil, oh! – That’s not going to work. Aw what are you doing? – [Blake] Oh! – [Martin] What are we doing, you say? – What am I doing? (laughs) – [Blake] Hey Neil, good effort! – Blake thinks he’s got this time. Thing is, what’s going to happen is when they get that first bit right, they’re all of a sudden going to get an awful long way along it. That’s what they need to do
now is nail this first piece. – [Neil] Yep, yep, turn, yes! – Yes, yes, he’s got it – Oh, yes! God dang, you can do it, you can do it! – That was good. Come on Neil. Well this is to avoid forfeit. Come on, you can do it, come on Neil. – [Blake] That’s it, that’s it
– [Martin] Yes, yes, yes, use that tree, use it, use it. Wait, wait until you’re ready. Come on Neil, hop it up – [Blake] Oh my God, he’s so-
that is so close to falling. Go on Neil, go on Neil.
– [Martin] Go on Neil! – [Blake] Go on Neil, go on Neil! Yes! (laughing) – [Neil] Scary – I can’t believe you’ve done it. – Oh my God, that’s incredible
– Trials is paying off – Trials is paying off,
you boys are getting- Right on dude, that was amazing. Well, I don’t really know
what to do about this. – I’ve got one – I think we need to go to a decider, because basically I
can’t give Neil a forfeit after that performance on the last log – No, that was brilliant – I mean, technically Blake’s in the lead, but I think we need to give
the opportunity to square up. – [Blake] Okay. – It’s that, you know, or… – [Neil] I don’t want
to go through that again – [Blake] No. – I don’t think you want
to do that one again, I think we walk away when
we know we’re doing well. – [Blake] What are we going to do? – I think I’ve got an idea. Okay, it’s a sudden death situation. What we’re going to do is run
the middle log, that we rode, in reverse, it’s going
to be very difficult, uh, but it’s one of those lines that if they get it just on point, it’s downhill they’ll have momentum, and it means that they might
get out of the other side. The first person to get this clear wins. Well they don’t win anything actually, they don’t lose and that’s
the important point, because the loser is going
to have a pay a forfeit, and I cannot wait. – [ Blake] This is hard. – [Martin] Well do you want
to out the beam back in? – No – Alright well this is the gate,
look where the gate’s going because it’s not just getting up there, you have to get through this gate and (laughs) through there. – You ready Neil? – [Neil] Blake, you dirty rotter. – You ready? I think they’re ready. (laughs) They want to see carnage, splinters. Oh! I just thought of that, imagine crashing and getting
splinters everywhere. – [Neil] Everywhere? – Everywhere, inside of you. Imagine you lift up your
front wheel and it misses and you just go to the bottom. – Uh oh, sounds like someone
found his water pistol. Damn it doesn’t work. This has been a real let down. I really had some big plans for that, in episode number 5 of Martin
Ashton’s Trials Academy, there will be a very good water gun. Who’s up first? There he goes, Blake’s in. Confident start, oh, this is going to be another one of those where you get the entry right. – [Blake] It feels like a trampoline. – Let me just tell you, the
forfeit is worth waiting for, I’m going to enjoy it,
it’s going to be fun. Here comes Neil, oh he’s got speed, oh! This is hard. That’s one go each, one go. Here comes Blake for his second
go, he’s go the right speed, oh, he lost the front
end, it’s looking, whoa! I can’t believe you tried
to roll through that. – Yeah, how else am I
supposed to get through there? – I thought you were going
to wheely up the other side, at least. Wow, that was a good effort, here’s Neil. Good, good, oh. That was insane, what
they tried just then, I don’t think he thought that through. (laughs) Here he comes again, he’s
not lost any confidence. Whoa. Nibbly, this one’s nibbly, it’s difficult. – [Blake] That’s hard, Neil. – Neil can pull this off. Neil only needs to get the front
lift right and he’s got it, but I think Blake’s confidence building. – [Camera Man] Yeah that was weird. – He could just take the win. And he’s done it, oh Neil! – Good luck Neil, that’s hard! – [Martin] I could see it coming. (laughing) No! I don’t believe it,
I cannot believe that. That was unreal. – I think we’ve learned
a lot from our master. – I honestly can’t say, no forfeits. – Yes! I mean, what’s incredible about that, was that they’re getting
better and better at trials. I’m loving it, right? And you would think that we
can’t give these guys a forfeit, ’cause they’ve ridden so well, but I’m afraid that’s
not how the world works, you’re just going to both have
to pay the price, I’m afraid, ’cause I’m not going to let you guys down. Right, forfeit time. – Come on, let’s do it. – Right – Can we have some more cream? – You can have as much cream as you want. Okay, if there’s any clothes
you would like to remove or anything you would like
not to get wet at this moment. (mumbling) – Yeah, what kind of forfeit is this? – Kay – Oh yeah, can I have one of those? – Lovely beers, hang on a second. Now I can promise you both
that I went into the local, uh, establishment to buy these
beers and I said to the man, I said to the man: Can I have the fizziest,
frothiest beer you sell, because I want to empty
into my friend’s face. And that’s what I’m going to do right now. – Can I-. We- – You both stay there, right lads. – So we’re going to have a beer. – Camera man, get in and get your angle. Who’s going first? – But I’m holding little man
here, because he will run away. – Now Neil, you’re not going anywhere. – Can I get a swig? – No, no, no, no, no,
that’s not how this works. – I’m holding on to you – I’m not going to run away. – Right, ‘kay, I want- have
we got slow-mo on this? Okay, right. Leo, have you got it? Okay Neil, I’m sorry about this. – It looks nice, thanks for the beer dude. – Oh no, who is- you’re
going to get yourself. – Oh, who’s going to get wet? Ready? (laughs) (coughs) (laughs) – [Blake] Oh, well that was impressive. – [Martin] That was actually
really brilliant, okay. Blake, you’re up. No you guys, you guys,
you guys were so good. I feel bad, well I promised
the viewers somethings. And I want to get Blake so good. Ready, Ready? Camera man? Here we go. (laughs) – [Blake] That went up my nose. – All right lads, have a drink. – Cheers!
– That was fantastic! Trials, uh, lesson number 4 is done, we’ve got a fantastic trials competition coming in lesson number
five which will be up soon. We’re filming it here in Westna and I’m looking forward to that a lot. These boys are getting good,
let’s face it, it’s working. Make sure you’re practicing
your trials at home, click just there if you’d like to see some of the previous episodes,
hit the globe to subscribe, and I will see you for the
Ashton Trials Academy next time. Well done lads. – Thanks Mr. Ashton.
