How To Drift On A Mountain Bike | MTB Skills

– Welcome to my class, drifting. One of my favourite things
to do on a bike is the drift. It can help you on the trails, it can help you on a sticky situation when you’re going flat out into a corner, just let the bike drift round. Just remember, locking the back brake, it’s not a drift, it’s a skid. Drifting can damage your local trails so learn the drift on your own built trail or on a gravel road. Just remember to respect your local area. (upbeat music) That is not a drift, uh-uh, but you can use a skid to start a drift. This dirt, stuff, rock,
is perfect for drift. It’s like riding on marbles. This terrain, so good for
practising drifts on. If you can get it here you
can get it on the trail. (upbeat music) (laughs) All right, so we’ve got
a hill here, a descent, we’ve got loads of speed
coming into the corner here. It’s quite wide on the outside,
but tight on the inside. There’s trees everywhere. You don’t wanna just
lock on the back brake, you wanna carry your
speed through that corner. Speed is key when it comes to drifting. More is better. The faster you go, the
easier your tyres are gonna break loose in the dirt
and start to drift. All right, you’re coming in
super fast into this turn, you wanna drift, but you
need to initiate it somehow. I down the back brake a little bit. I know I said drifting is not skidding, but you need to initiate it somehow. Down the back brake,
let the bike drift out because even Ken Block
pulls that handbrake. So, there’s two techniques. Foot out, I recommend this for beginners because this, basically your
foot is acting as a stabiliser. The other one is a bit more advanced where you keep both feet
on the pedals in the drift. But if you’re learning you could
just slide out on that one. So, when you’re coming into your drift you wanna know your exits, you wanna have your head up,
you wanna spot your exit. On a flat this is easy, you can see your exits pretty simple. But on terrain like this
where it’s off camber, you got obstacles, you
got trees everywhere, definitely you wanna
know where your exit is because when that wheel grabs it’s gonna fire you in the
direction that you’re pointing. Look at that! That is my class on how to drift. Speed! Just practise, man,
practise makes perfect. If you wanna know how to
