How A Folding Bike Changed My Life

How A Folding Bike Changed My Life

Hi, I’m Roger Mansfield. I’m a professional Driver with Bison Transport
and I’ve been driving with Bison for six years. So, around late April, I was asked if I would
like to test drive the Dahon folding bikes and see how they would benefit Drivers’ overall
fitness while they’re out on the road. For the first few weeks I had the Speed Uno,
which is the black, single-gear bike. It was perfect for just starting out and getting
into it, and getting used to cycling and folding it up and taking it on the road. And after a few weeks Dahon sent us the new
Speed D8, which is the orange bike. Big difference is it’s an 8-speed, it has
V brakes on the handlebars instead of the coaster brake, which is on the Speed Uno. So I had that from then until now. The Speed Uno is a good bike for starting
out and getting used to cycling, especially if you haven’t been cycling in a few years. Maybe you just have some modest fitness goals,
just wanna increase your activity. The new Speed D8, which is the orange bike,
little bit more advanced because it has eight speeds. You can climb moderate hills and it goes a
lot faster. It’s a little bit more adjustable. The tires are upgraded, they’re meant to be
more puncture-resistant. Cycling has really changed my overall health,
sitting behind the wheel of a truck all day for upwards of 11 to 13 hours. When I first started as a professional Driver,
almost 8 years ago, I knew that weight loss and fitness was gonna be an issue. Gained quite a bit of weight in my first few
years driving, so I’ve always looked to balance that by eating right, but it was always kind
of…I plateaued, and weight loss was always an issue for me. So when I was approached about testing these
Dahon bikes, I was really excited because I knew it was gonna give me the leg up that
I needed. Once I got into it, I started to notice right
away the benefits of cycling every day and I started to think more long term, started
to think further down the road. How much weight could I lose by the end of
the summer? Maybe 20 pounds, maybe 30 pounds isn’t out
of the question. Once we got the Speed 8 and I really started
to kick it up and really started to gain strength in my leg, I put a number…I wanted to lose
30 pounds by the end of the summer. As of right now, from the end of April until
just about the end of August I’ve lost 34 pounds, down from 250 pounds to about 216. Not only just the weight loss, it’s the overall
health benefits, the benefits to your sleep, your eating habits. My body is demanding that I eat better, that
I eat cleaner, that I eat for fuel now. I need to have protein, I need to have vital
nutrients and stuff. Your body requires it, especially when you’re
doing a lot of extra activity and a lot of physical exertion. There’s that initial hurdle that you have
to leap over. You know, maybe you’ve driven for 20, 30 years,
you haven’t done any activity, you’re very out of shape, you’re overweight. There’s that initial hurdle that you have
to get over. For the first couple of weeks I was feeling
it. My legs were sore. I was wondering if I would ever be able to
get it going the way I wanted to, but that goes away. A lot of Drivers will tell you that we just
don’t have the time to commit to an extra activity, like cycling every day. It’s kind of a myth, because the time is there. Professional Drivers are very busy. Once you get to the truck stop you’ve gotta
have a shower, you’ve gotta eat. You’re talking to your family. Next thing you know, you have to go to bed
because you’ve got to drive the next day. So there’s really only a small window of time
but, especially with Bison, we’re very accommodating to a driver’s overall health and lifestyle. They know my fitness goals, they’re very aware
of what I’m trying to do and they’re very accommodating for me. And I’m here to tell you that there is time. Cycling is a really good option because you
can get a lot done in a shorter amount of time, whereas if you’re jogging, running,
walking, you need more time to get the same amount of fitness that you get for cycling. Any professional Driver who’s ever had any
problems with weight loss or any problems staying active while they’re out on the road,
picking up one of these little folding bikes is an excellent idea. Twenty minutes, twenty minutes a day and you’re
gonna get the heart rate going. You’re gonna be sweating, get the blood pumping. I’d definitely recommend getting one.
