Groupset, Components & Plot Twist | Cheap Bike To Super Bike Ep. 3

Groupset, Components & Plot Twist | Cheap Bike To Super Bike Ep. 3

(whooshing logo) – Money on. And for another great
video, in fact part one, exactly why we choose bike. How about clicking just down here. (huffs) (phone vibrates) – Oh, got someone one
the phone, who’s that? Where’s my phone? It’s ringing, Lyody. Hello mate, yeah, yeah look,
yeah it looks really good! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I’m sure the viewers will love it. Yeah, oh right, ha, nice one. Hang on, I’ve gotta go, I’ve got Ollie on the phone. I’ve been waiting for his call
for ages, few hours, right. Ollie, how’s it going mate? – Hey mate, yeah alright. How you doing? – Yeah, not to bad, look. I’m sorry to have to bother you but, well, I’ve been
trying to get hold of you because the other lads,
they’ve really stitched me up. I asked them how to paint this bike and look at what it’s ended up like. Yeah, just check it out mate,
not that great lets face it. What am I gonna do? – I think you need to re-paint it. – Well yeah, this was just
a practice lets face it because I was waiting for this call. Right Ollie, we see a lot of cool bikes don’t we in the bike vault. What am I gonna do mate? – Man, we do. Well I think you’ve gotta
be original but that’s hard, ’cause, you know, we
see so many awesome ones on the tech show and stuff. I think what you’ve gotta do right is come up with a paint job. What is the last paint job that the viewer or anyone is gonna expect
you to put on a bike? And whatever that is, do that. – You’re right, what’s the last thing that they would expect
me to paint a bike like? Yeah, I like that. The last thing last thing
they would think I would do. (evil laugh) (cheesy 80’s pop music) – You really thought I was
gonna leave it like that? Ye of little faith. Oh no, no, no, no, no. I’ve decided to paint it in one of the most iconic colors in cycling, Celeste and I think it looks, well, beautiful. But we’re not done are we? Oh no, we need to now
find out what components we’re gonna deck out this beauty in, so. Alright Dan, how’s it going mate? – All good, yeah, last you
interrupted me during in my Sufferfest training and now
you’ve got me out the shower. Not even done my hair look. – Well at least you’re
wearing some clothes. Right, a quick one mate, you
gave me some great advice on painting the bike but
now I’ve gotta kit it out. – I did, looks good. – [Jon] Yeah. – I like the Romanian flag colors. – Yeah, yeah, anyway yeah, you haven’t seen it lately have you? Anyway mate, what am I
gonna deck the bike out in? I need your help on this one for a start. – Oh, well I mean, that frame now painted in my colors deserves top of the range kit I reckon. I’d get that new SRAM RED
axis groupset to start with, that looks pretty funky. I would put on, Fizik saddle
– Okay. with carbon rails. I’d go for the Antares normally, that’s the one that’s most
comfortable for my rear. And I would also zip 303’s
on it, all round wheels. – Right okay, not really
sticking within my budget of about £600, but I like your thinking and you’ve certainly given
me at least one option I reckon there that I could
get within that budget. So yeah, thanks mate. – You’ve got some contacts mate,
you can get it trade price. Still might not get
inside your £600 budget but give it your best shot. – Alright buddy thanks a
lot buddy, see you soon. – Soon you soon. – Right lets see where, what?! What on earth? Wake up, what is wrong with you? – Ah, it’s lunch time,
I’m having a quick break. – [Jon] Alright alright, anyway look, I’ve gotta get out this
cheap bike to super bike. What am I gonna put on it? – Well Campagnolo obviously. – [Jon] You reckon? – Yes mate, mechanical,
keep it nice and retro and yeah it will give
it a lovely little feel. – [Jon] Disc brakes or now? – No, rim break mate
– Alright, okay. Just a classic old bike. – Keep it classic, keep
it retro, keep it stylish. – So, what have I decided to do? Well, I’ve decided to
replace 105 with 105. So I’m taking off or I have taken off that 105 5500 groupset,
released way back in 1999, with this the 5800 version
of the 105 groupset. Now this was replaced in 2018 but there are still loads of it around. And get this, when I bought this groupset I even managed to get couple
of cheeky bits of Ultegra too. So I got Ultegra front
mech, Ultegra bottom bracket and even a KMC extra light chain as well. That has got loads of
trickle down technology, the 105 groupset and it’s
arguably the peoples choice when it comes to groupsets. Now for many viewers out
there buying parts online is perfectly normal,
but for others it’s not. But I can’t hide the fact that basically if you are going to look for a bargain, the internet is often the place you’re gonna find yourself going. So, for instance this groupset, £324. And then check these out, got these vision wheels
from Wiggle, £129.99. Now it’s a fairly chunky investment and also slightly risky perhaps because well, the wheels that did come on the bike originally
where upgraded and fairly new. But, well, I can sell those on in the second hand market lets face it. But these ones, these look great and part of being a super bike
is about looking cool right? Staying with the wheels than, well we’ve decided to
put some new tires on. Because the 23 millimeters
ones that came with the bike, they’re not gonna be that kind on our backsides, lets face it. Especially with the sate of our roads. So something that we all agreed on was to put some Continental
GP 4000’s on the bike because some decent tires
can transform the feel and behavior of your bike
when your ride along. These ones £59.99. Now the inner tubes I
actually managed to salvage. Which is good news because they had no puncture patches on them whatsoever. Which makes me think, Jonny, the guy I bought the bike from, had a few punctures and well he put some new tubes in quite recently. Right those original handle
bars, they had to go. They were, well, quite
frankly awful in shape and I’ve got no idea what on earth the actual designer was
thinking when they made them. They’re actually from the
time when ergonomic bars were becoming very, very popular and every bar manufacturer
had their own version of doing something wild and wacky. So, we’ve replaced them with
these Deda compact ones, just £12.95, great value for money. As well as a new new
Deda stem too, £16.99. Now Si Richardson, he
was absolutely gutted that I had to get rid
of that original stem because he really liked the
shape of it and the lines. So good news Si, I have
actually kept for you somewhere as a little memento. Now, I’ve also changed the seat post too to a Deda one, £17.50. So again it matches in
with the bars and the stem. And then get this, this saddle,
Fizik Arione carbon breaded. Friend of mine was
selling this on Facebook, he’d literally just put it up there, £25. This is my favorite shape of
saddle, it’s so comfortable. I’m not that fussed really
what the other presenters think because this was an absolute
bargain for that price. And then finally the finishing touch, a little bit of handle
bar tape here, £3.99. Blimey, £9.64 remaining, which means I’ve spent £890.36. Of course that does
include the original bike, as well as two paint jobs, that just well, had to be done lets face it. Many of you will have an existing bike similar to this at home that you could well be
thinking of upgrading. So hopefully these choices have
your some food for thought. But what’s coming up then? Well next week I’m actually
gonna build up the bike from scratch, something
which loads and loads of you mention in the comments below. You’re desperate to see it being done. So I’m gonna deliver just like the milkman and build this bike up for you,
so stay tuned for that one. In the mean time remember to like and share this video with your friends. Give it a big thumbs up, so far you’ve all
absolutely been loving it. Don’t forget, check out the GCN shop at shop.globalcyclingnetwork.com and for parts one and two how about clicking down
