E Mountain Bike Tips From MTB Legend Nicolas Vouilloz

– So today we’re talking eBike skills with a very special guest,
we’ve got Nicolas Vouilloz the 10 times world title champion. – Salud! – So over to Steve first
with some climbing tips. (upbeat music) – Hey so we’ve got a
bit of a bank coming up, what’s some kind of tips
for something like this? – Trust your line, so you
see that outside is better. Put the right gear. – What about body position? – Body position you really
need to find the right balance. It can be low on the saddle. – [Neil] You sit down quite a lot? – Yes sit down quite a lot to prevent the wheely,
so it’s much better. – What about cadence? – Yeah I think you need to be quite high to use the torque of the engine. But it really depends on
the engine you are using. – This is gonna be 20 degrees – Yeah, look at that. – Get up this on a normal bike? – [Neil] Oh that’s tricky let’s try it. – Oh yeah the next section let’s try it. A bit of speed. – Whoa did you get that? Well Niko we’ve come up a
long, long 20 degrees slope and we’re coming to the top of it and there’s two line choices. You’ve got an outside line, which has got solid ground and then you’ve got an inside line with slightly loose ground. What’s your choice here? – Yeah definitely I would
choose the good grip just because you need to
carry a bit more extra speed to be able to do the steps. Even if the steps are a bit
higher than on the left part. It’s like a bigger front position. – Big change in body position. – Yeah you are staying in the middle and then you are always, I always touching my handlebar
when I try to do this. (grunts) – But the great thing about ebikes, you can just roll down and
try the bloody thing again. – He’s probably accelerating. – Yeah I accelerate to hit this. (grunts) – Yeah! Okay last attempt I’m gonna
go on the outside line, which might set you up
better for what’s ahead. Bloody steep on this bit. – I keep some back
because I knew that, whoa! – There you go. Line choice is super
important on hill climb. (upbeat music) So Niko do you think there are any specific ebike skills for descending? – At the end I don’t think so. The first idea is that when you try you are listening to the
need to break earlier and then as soon as you
put some sticky compound and good tyres you just break at the same place. – It’s almost ride a grippier tyre and a more heavyweight tyre than you would on maybe an enduro bike? – Yeah of course because
you are the engine so you don’t care if your tyre are heavy or if you have a soft
compound at the back. So you will just help in uphill as well but for breaking it could
be just the right combo. – And to me your style
of riding on an ebike looks exactly the same
as you on a downhill bike so there can’t be that much difference. – Yeah because I really
like my really light bike. I really try to adjust
and set up for that. Just have fun, play, enjoy, and at the end it’s where the future of
the bike will bring us. – When it comes to
winning a world cup race or world championship downhill races, you have to be really fast, you have to be crazy. You also have to carry speed everywhere. Because it comes down
to hundredths of seconds so in corners you’re trying
to carry speed everywhere, is it the same on an ebike even though you know you’ve got a motor to get yourself back up to speed? – Just at the end it’s the same stuff. You just have the engine to
help when you make a mistake and that you don’t have
and you kill yourself with when you don’t have. But I think it’s the same idea. – When it comes to the actual skill, I know you ride a motorbike
as well, motocross, do you think it is, because we get this question quite a lot, people say ebikes are motorbikes,
but I think, personally, the skills are exactly the
same as a mountain bike. It’s nothing like motocross bike. – Yeah I agree with you totally. I’m sure if you give an
ebike to a motocross rider they will be struggling the
same like if you take a bike, even if it’s heavier they
will feel it’s really light, not stable, and really not a motorbike. All the same, for sure, at the end you just set
the suspension differently, you break a bit earlier but just like a mountain
bike, you do the same thing – Whilst you’re here you should

the weekly EMBN show and over there for how to climb. – And don’t hesitate
to give him a thumbs up if you like to ride your bike fast. – Really fast.
