Alpinestars Durban ADV/Dual Sport Motorcycle Jacket

Alpinestars Durban ADV/Dual Sport Motorcycle Jacket

Hey guys. Chase, here at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC,
and welcome to our spotlight video for the Durban jacket from Alpinestars. All right guys, so the Durban jacket from
Alpinestars, we love this jacket. It’s new from Alpinestars. They’ve been around a long
time. They’re an Italian company, and they make some very high quality gear. When we
look at the Durban jacket, you get an extremely technical jacket. It’s going to give you four
seasons of riding, great protection built-in, and you’re getting Gore-Tex with this jacket.
When it comes to anything waterproof, Gore-Tex, hands down, is the best you are going to get. Now, I’ve got Vinny here today. Vinny is 6-feet
tall, he’s 160 pounds and he’s got a 37-inch chest. He’s wearing a size small in this jacket.
Now, when we talk about sizing, this jacket is going to have more of an American cut.
So Vinny’s got plenty of room in the chest, plenty in the abdomen, plenty of length at
the torso, but he’s going to have plenty of adjustability with this jacket. We’ll show
you that, here in just a few minutes. Now, construction. Starting out, you’ve got
three materials that make up the outer shell of this jacket. You’ve got 500 denier, 600
denier ripstop in those high-abrasion areas, and also here on the elbow. This is where
you’re going to get super-fabric, which is welded ceramic plates over top at 600 denier,
which is truly the highest degree of abrasion resistance you’re going to get with any material
that’s available today. So you’re getting those three materials which make it a very
durable jacket. They’ve got you covered if you go down, you’re not going to rip through
this entire jacket. Now from a protection stand point, they’ve
really covered all their bases here. You’re going to get their Nucleon CE-rated armor
as proprietary to Alpinestars. You’re going to get that here in the elbow and in the shoulders
on both sides. You are going to get a chest pad as well as a back pad, but those are not
CE-rated. That’s not the Nucleon armor. However, if you do want to, you can upgrade to that
with this jacket if you want. Another awesome feature that we love that
Alpinestars has done with this jacket, this is really forward-thinking, if I turn Vinny
here to this side, he’s actually got these little tabs you can pull out. It’ll allow
you to wear this jacket with the Alpinestar’s Bionic neck brace system. So if Vinny wanted
to be one of those hardcore riders that likes a rocking neck brace, this jacket is built
to be compatible with their neck brace. So, that’s a great safety feature coming from
Alpinestars. Now, remember we talked about fit in the beginning.
I said Vinny has got plenty of room in the chest and the abdomen, but there’s plenty
of adjustment with this jacket. If we start up here at the top and look, I do like they’ve
got this neoprene pad right here to go over the Adam’s apple. It’s just a nice touch.
It’s going to prevent any chafing while you’re out riding, but you can open up this neck.
You’re going to have Velcro closure here. If I have Vinny turn towards me just a little
bit, I really like what they’ve done. Instead of having the snap closure on this part up
here on the neck, you actually have a hook and loop so you can just hook it there. It’s
going to stay in place. That’s a nice touch because it allows you to do that when you’re
riding if you have gloves on, snaps can be hard to find or hard to do. That’s just a
nice touch from Alpinestars. A lot of great thinking went into that. So turn back to the front, Vinny. So if we
come down here, you are going to have adjustment straps on each side of the waist, again, to
cinch that down. You don’t want any excess material flapping around. And on the inner
arm here, on the bicep and the forearm, you’re going to have straps there. So again, a lot
of adjustment to really cinch down any excess material you might have while you’re wearing
this jacket. Now, you’re going to have five pockets on
the front of this jacket, and you’re also going to have one in the rear that we’re going
to get to, here in a second. You’re going to have two chest pockets here. Just keep
in mind, these aren’t waterproof pockets. However, down here at the bottom. If I have
Vinny turn just a little bit for me. So, you’re going to have two cargo pockets down here
at the bottom. The nice thing is, big zipper garage. You’re going to have a rubber-coated
zipper. These pockets down here are going to be waterproof so if you want to put anything
in there, that is going to stay dry even in that heavy rain. So Vinny, you can turn back to the front.
So, again, four pockets here on the front and then you are going to have an ID pocket
here on the front of the left forearm, it’s going to be a rubber coated-zipper. Again,
that’s where you keep your ID. If you have a crash, if you’re unconscious or anything
like that, that’s where people are going to go look for to get any information they’re
going to need from you. Now, it really puts this jacket into that
four-season category because you’re getting that Gore-Tex. You’re going to have that internal
fleece liner that we’re going to talk about in a minute. You’re also going to get great
venting out of this jacket which is going to allow you to wear it even on those warm
and hot summer riding day. If we look, starting with the sleeves, first jacket I’ve ever seen
that does this. If I have Vinny turn and face, you actually
have a full 360-degrees zipper around this bicep sleeve. This entire sleeve will zip
off. So if Vinny wanted to, he could rock this jacket just as a vest to really allow
just a maximum amount of air to come into it. You’re going to have two vents up here
at the top on each side. Just a little bit of venting air flow that goes through there.
You are going to have big forearm vents down here along the bottom as well. It’s going
to allow a lot of air to come up through this jacket while you’re riding. Now right here, this is hands down, my favorite
ventilation design I’ve ever seen on a jacket. If I open up the neck here and we cinch that
back, if I could get it. There we go. So, I’m going to open this up. Again, a lot of
adjustability, big storm flaps here in the front, you can have just the bottom closed
with the top open. Really, they give you a lot of options with this jacket, which is
what I like. So if we open it up and snap it open, folds
over on itself. You’re going to have Velcro closure there. So right now, if you look at
the inside, Vinny has this sort of zipped completely shut. But what we’re going to do,
we actually have two zippers on the main front here and that’s going to give a ton of ventilation.
We’re going to show you how you do that. So if we unzip this all the way, I’ll have
Vinny do it for me. So, they have two zippers on the front of this jacket. You have the
one that Vinny had it zipped up, which is going to completely close it off, but now
you’re going to have a second zipper. So you see a lot of guys when they’re out riding,
if they’re standing up or sitting up, they like to unzip their jacket either a quarter
of the way or half-way down to get that maximum air flow. Alpinestars have taken that idea
and they made to where you can still have this jacket fully-zipped, but get that amount
of ventilation out of it. So if you look, what he’s done now, he’s went
to that first zipper. So now this entire black panel that comes all the way up the front
of the jacket, that is now one huge vent panel. So if Vinny wanted to, he can rock it this
way on that hot summer day and that is going to give a ton of air that is going to go through
this jacket. And you take that, coupled with the removable sleeves, and honestly, I don’t
know of any jacket that is going to have more venting than what you’re going to get with
this jacket. All right. Now, Vinny, spin around for me
so we can look at the back of the jacket. Again, so up here at the top, you are going
to have a neoprene top around the collar there. Again, and that’s to prevent chafing, a nice
touch from Alpinestars. Starting at the top, working our way down. This is going to be
that 600 denier ripstop material. So again, if that were to rip, the way it’s stitched
prevents it from ripping farther, and that’s going to be here in that high-abrasion zone
and that’s again, over that back pad that they have included. Up here at the top, this is going to be compatible
with the two-liter hydration pack. So if you want to put a water bladder in there, you
can. This right here, this is going to be an opening for your sip tube to come out.
Right here, this is going to be your main opening to put your hydration bladder inside.
Now again, on the back here, big zip vents. That’s going to allow this jacket to really
breath well, allow that air coming through the front to pass through the back. Now if we work our way down here, this is
something unique. I haven’t seen this before, but I like what they’ve done with this rear
pouch here. So this was that pocket that I was talking to on the back, and it’s going
to be a really versatile pocket. If you look at it, right now, the way we have it done
up is more of like a fanny pack and it removes itself. You can unzip it and remove it from
the jacket and it gives you a ton of extra storage there. What they’ve done though, is there’s actually
two places to zip this jacket up if I wanted to. And we’re going to show you when we take
this jacket off of Vinny and really show you the inside, we’re going to show you how this
detaches here in a minute. But you actually have two ways to attach this pocket to the
back. This way that Vinny has it…Vinny, if you turn sideways for me…you can see
how much room he has inside that pocket. But if you wanted to, he could take this second
zipper right here, and he could zip it to there. What that does is it’s going to make
it much more compact and it turns up more into that rabbit-style pouch that we’ve seen
with a lot of other jackets. So again, a lot of technicality, a lot of adjustability with
this jacket. So Vinny, face back to the front for me. Now as we work our way to the inside
of the jacket, before we get there, I am going to show you right here, this is going to be
an internal waterproof pocket. So if Vinny wanted to, he could keep his wallet or his
phone inside there and that’s going to stay dry. It’s a good touch. Now, we’re going to unzip this and check out
the inside. So first thing you’re going to notice with it, you are going to have this
adjustment. This belt here around Vinny’s waist, that’s just to support the weight of
the jacket. So for those longer rides, if you have that cinched down, it’s going to
support the weight of the jacket and just make it very comfortable to wear all day long.
So on the inside of the shell here, you are going to have a mesh comfort liner, and you
are going to have cargo pockets on each side. Now, right here, you see Gore-Tex. This is
going to be your Gore-Tex liner. This is going to go underneath the jacket. This is separate
from the shell. It’s not zip-in, but you are going to have snap loops up here, that’s going
to keep it in place and you’re going to have those on the inside of the sleeves as well.
Now, the nice thing about this liner is that it’s wearable by itself. If Vinny wanted to,
he could take this shell off and he could rock just this Gore-Tex liner as a destination
piece. That’s just a great touch from Alpinestars. Now, if we unzip it, if we look at the inside,
nice microfleece liner on the inside. So it’s going to be insulated, it’s going to keep
you warm and you are going to have a couple of mesh pockets on the inside as well. Now
here on the back of the jacket, you’re not going to see it now, you will when we take
this off of Vinny and break down the inside completely. You are going to have a jacket-to-pant
zipper connection. Vinny is wearing the pants that go with this
jacket. If he wanted to, he could zip these together to make sure absolutely no water
is going to get down into his pants. So again, a lot of versatility, a ton of functionality
with this jacket. So this is the Durban jacket from Alpinestars, guys. Again, great functionality,
great protection and on top of that, you’re getting that Gore-Tex liner which is hands
down, the best of the best when it comes to waterproof. All right, so now we’ve got the shell and
the liner separate on the table, we’re going to talk about each one here. So first, we’re
going to start with the liner. Again, this will be your Gore-Tex liner on the inside
of the jacket. It’s guaranteed to keep you dry. It’s guaranteed for life, and what we
love about this is it’s going to be worn as a destination piece. So you can rock this
without the jacket, it’s still going to be waterproof. So if you look at the outside,
down here at the bottom, around the wrist, you are going to have Velcro straps just to
cinch that down. This isn’t going to be a zip-in liner, but
you can snap. And then you’re going to have snaps down here at the sleeves, at the end
of the sleeve, and you are going to have them up here on the chest as well. Now if we unzip
it, nice big YKK zipper down the middle. If we open it up and look at the inside, you’re
going to have a nice microfleece lining on the inside. It’s going to be very warm, very
comfortable and you are going to have one mesh pocket on each side of the liner. So
that’s your Gore-Tex lining on the inside. Now, if we get the jacket and we look at the
shell here, and we open this thing up, we start down here at the bottom. I do want to
point out, you do have these elastic cinches on each side. Again, that’s just to help with
the adjustability of the jacket to cinch it down. Right here, this is going to be your
jacket-to-pant zipper. Now there is a pant that we mentioned before that does match this
jacket, so make sure you check out our Adventure Buyer’s Guide for pants and we talk about
the pants in detail for this jacket. There’s your zipper connection right there. Working our way up, this is going to be your
adjustment belt around the waist. Now the nice thing is, this is going to be adjustable
so you can move it up or down, or you can if you want, you can completely take this
and remove it from the jacket. You are going to have one mesh pocket on the inside, right
here on each side, and you are going to have a mesh liner throughout the entire inside.
Now, right here, this is where your back piece is going to go. So I’ve already taken it out. This is going
to be your EVA foam pad that comes included with the jacket, but remember, this isn’t
CE-rated, but you can upgrade to their Nucleon armor CE-rated back pad, if you want to do
that and it’s going to go right here. Then over here on the sides, this is your chest
armor piece, you can see it through the jacket just a little bit. This is also going to be
removable. There’s a big zipper down here at the bottom of the jacket. If you open that
up, you can get to the inside and remove that chest armor. All right, so this is the Durban jacket from
Alpinestars. Now remember, you’re getting a very technical piece of clothing here. You’re
going to get that Gore-Tex liner on the inside that can be worn by itself, a lot of protection,
and some of the best ventilation that I’ve seen of any adventure jacket on the market.
