2018 Specialized Roubaix | Range Review | Tredz Bikes

So this is the Specialized Roubaix, an
endurance road bike that is named after the grueling Paris Roubaix classic road
race. Designed to be fast and smooth, the Specialized Roubaix is built for riding
over challenging road surfaces, like the cobbles you find on a Paris Roubaix. So
the new Specialized Roubaix frame is actually the lightest that Specialized have
ever built, at just 700 grams the frame and 200 grams for the fork. Even when you
add in the extra 300 grams for the future shock, this is still a lightweight bike. Working in conjunction with McLaren F1,
Specialized have taken an innovative approach to providing compliance from road bikes. The
future shock is a suspension cartridge that offers 20 millimeters of suspension
travel between the frame and the handlebars. This allows the bike to move
under you for a smoother ride, but keeps the wheels stiffly connected to the
frame for predictable handling. Specialized have dropped the seat stays
and connected the seat tube below the top tube. This gives an extra 20
degrees of rearward arc compliance from the narrow seat tube, this gives you
extra comfort in the saddle when you’re riding over rough road surfaces. So all
models of the Roubaix feature a compact 50-34 tooth chain set with a wide range
cassette. This gives you a good spread of gears for tackling varied terrain. The
entry-level bikes get Tiagra 2×10 speed, and all the other bikes then get
11 speed with 105 Tiagra or Dura Ace. You get disc brakes on all models for
consistent stopping power in all weather conditions.
The entry-level model gets mechanical, all of the other models get hydraulic
disc brakes for improved stopping power. So the 700c wheels on all models
feature slightly wider 28mm tires, again this offers a smoother ride on
challenging road surfaces. All of the wheels feature sealed cartridge bearings
for improved reliability, especially in challenging weather conditions. The range
starts with Axis sport disc wheels. The wheels get lighter as you move up
through the range. With its fatigue reducing compliance features, the Roubaix
is ideal for sportives and any long distance road riding over rough road
surfaces. Not just for racing, all cyclists will benefit from the smooth
ride offered by the Roubaix.
