2000 U.S. Women’s Open Film: “Karrie’s Conquest”

It is the most important prize in women’s golf An examination of talent character heart and nerve A chance to join the ranks of the game’s elite For four days at the Merritt Club in the suburbs of Chicago the finest players in the game gathered to compete for the United States Women’s Open title There were strokes of sublime brilliance Remarkable displays of courage Moments of supreme disappointment And in the end a young woman from Australia re-established herself as the best player in her sport NBC Sports and the United States Golf Association proudly present the highlights of the 2000 US Women’s Open Kerry’s conquest Coming into the women’s US Open all signs pointed to an epic duel between Kerry Webb and Annika Sorenstam The top female golfers in the world Webb won the first three tournaments of the year and four of the first five highlighted by a victory in the Nabisco Championship The US Open is so hard to say that you’re gonna go out and win it I think you always want to try and be in contention and trying to have a chance to win it But you know, I had such a good year this year I at least wanted to have a good showing at the open and you know I put a bit of pressure on myself going into the open to try and do that But Sorenstam winner of a pair of women’s Open titles was riding a hot streak of her own with three wins in her last four starts And the other stars of the women’s game were hardly ready to concede the crown 1999 champion Julie Inkster was poised for a spirited defense of her title Physical force changes your game has changed you know, you gotta be hitting a good coming in there and better being sweet Long hitting Laura Davies is always a threat when her putter is on and she felt quite comfortable at the Merit Club It’s a very very good test because you can’t just stand at their own place driver Really? You’ve just got a 50 spots and work your way around the course, which I think is good Kelly Keaney has a pair of US Women’s Amateur titles to her credit and was looking to add a new trophy to her collection This has been my goal since I was little Drive always practice on the putting green hit that five footer This is the win the US Open Past champions were also seeking another title Seri Pok from South Korea the champion two years ago Two-time US Women’s Open champion Betsey came and 91 champion Meg Malin were also in the field The players were ready and so was the stage The merit club at just more than 6,500 yards is the longest course in women’s open history But the fairways were hard and fast and the course would not overpower the players with its length instead There would be a premium on accuracy all in all a course that would provide the players with a stern examination Sherry Steinhauer was low ammeter in the 83 women’s open and on Thursday was leading the championship at 3 under par when? disaster struck She dumped not one But two balls in the water on number six carted a quadruple bogey 8 and tumbled off the leaderboard Meanwhile Canada’s aje thorn playing her 9th hole of the day at the par-5 18th for Eagle And she was out at 4-under par 32 but soared to a 41 coming in with victories in three of the last five majors Julie Inkster had proven that even at age 40 when she was on she can beat anyone on the planet and on Thursday She played solidly if unspectacular Lee hitting 10 of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens she finished her round on the frontside this her third shot from the collar at the par-5 8th and Inkster showing that incredible touch around the greens giving herself a chance for birdie This to get to 3-under She would bogey her final hole, so an opening round of 200 par 74 Inkster Coming into the women’s open Annika Sorenstam was the hottest player on tour She had beaten Carr a weapon of playoff at the Evian Masters and she posted back-to-back wins at the Jamie Farr and the jao Big Apple Classic One of the toughest competitors in the game Sorenstam was looking to regain her spot alone atop the world of women’s golf But on day one, her game was not in peak form this for par at the 18th and a round of 1 over par 73 Anika’s plain competitor Laura Davies also opened with a 73 The third member of the group say epoch winner of the 98 Women’s Open was the longest hitter in the field But couldn’t turn her power into red numbers as she posted a +2 round of 74 The star of day one was none other than meg Malin Malin won the open in 91 at Fort Worth’s colonial Country Club So she clearly had the talent and the experience to challenge for the championship Starting her round on the back nine. Malin was out in two under par and this was for birdie at the hardest hole on the course the par-4 6th a Fine up and down at the 9th for par capped her round and Malin finished up with a 68 Fiery Dottie pepper got her round up to a good start with this broody putt at number one Two good shots nice putt Lane competitor. Khari Webb bogeyed the first but had this putt for birdie on the 172 yard par 3 second Not to be outdone the third member of the group Kelly Robbins lofted this approach to the par-5 3rd Little smooth wedge shot. You can see their beautiful form Good spin coming right down the fall line get this right down the fall line That would be good for a tap-in birdie and Robin’s move took one under And when your putter is hot, the game is easy. Just ask Ari Webb Big swing right to left two putts a good effort from here C to made 30 under three One of the surprises on day one came from 30 year old Shanee wah a native of Bunbury, Western, Australia Playing the back nine’ first She was out in 34 and this was for birdie at the 2nd her fourth birdie in the last five holes Par always a good score at the open and wah kept her momentum with this save at the 7th Oh, that’s a heck of a par there stroke. I saved She would par in for a 3-under par 69 putting her just one shot behind McMullen Very well played there the 167 yard par-3 16th is one of the more benign holes of the course an LPGA hall-of-famer Beth Daniel handled it with ease. That’s a great shot. That’s perfect Johnny dialed in with her irons right now But plain competitor Pat Hirst did even better Look at this shot inside of Daniel Then it was gray sparks turn and she owns one of the silkiest swings in the game Grace Park was first to putt And her read was right online Next up Daniel to get back to even par trip to the right 2 3 2 And then it was up the path hearse to complete the unlikely trifecta Dog and this whole really aren’t this easy one of the best shots of the day came from Daniella maka Pawnee who took dead aim at the pin on the 499 yard par-5 3rd And she would post a score of 72 Italy’s Silvia Cavallari goes to the hot putter hosting five birdies in route to an even par 72 Scotland’s Janice moody did her one better with six birdies in her opening round But she also had five bogeys and a double and could manage no better in a 73 Perhaps the best third shot we’ve seen today Long hit e Donna Andrews had the power to handle this third shot from the deep rough at the par-5 8th Successfully muscling it out of some of the thickest rough in US Women’s Open history Founding it onto the green to within birdie range Andrews also carded a 73 Pat Bradley playing in her 27th open on a USG a special exemption had this putt for birdie at the 4th The speed was near perfect, but the line wasn’t quite there Bradley desperately wanted to play well, but finished the day with a 75 Oh, yeah, there we go Khari Webb was one under par as she stepped to the tee at the par-3 7th This was a 7-iron and she has kept it left Oh 7-iron they’re back into the wind and it will Just catch in the long grass inside the hazard line that did Very fortunate An Awkward stance to say the least but the challenge now was to avoid a big number and just stay dry This isn’t that hard for shut guys. I mean just a drip down on it that she could back this up there A little hand action here sort of old-fashioned little hand actions Yeah, beautifully judged iceplug perfect speed perfect line This do we call that a muddy web needed more short game wizardry at the par-5 8th Sorry web has this short birdie putt to get to 2-under At the par-3 11 Webb’s tee shot found the thick rough around the collar of the green It wouldn’t be her best effort and she would need a difficult putt to again save par But in a US Open, these are the kind of putts that save Championships The 406 shard par-4 14th at the Merritt Club demands a long and precise tee shot and Carry, Webb handled the assignment with ease Better Stay in the fairway or get through now, that should be okay for playing competitors Ward is fortunately Kelly Robbins found the water with her tee shot made triple bogey seven and finished with a 74 this unaligned further right than Wu led Akari webson did not carry Dottie pepper dumped not one, but two tee shots in the water She carded a quadruple bogey a roundup began with great promise ended up at 76 Meanwhile, Kari Webb finished her round with a 3-under par 69. I played it very well that day I got my putter going and I think that calmed down It was just a great solid round of golf, I think maybe only one or two big bogeys So at the end of the first round it was Meg melon on top at 4-under web and Shaney hua whereas shot back Julie Inkster and Kelly booth shot 70 the group at 71 was led by Betsy King The US Women’s Open is open to any woman with a handicap index of 4.4 and 83 players earned their spots via sectional qualifying One of the qualifiers was Kerri Summerhays and if the name sounds familiar it should Her father Bruce is a star on the Senior PGA Tour and he was at the Mary club in a caddies bin Karen carries bag Unfortunately, she missed the cut but both father and daughter collected a memory to treasure Actually, I learned that if I want to make it out here. I’ve got a work hard I also learned this for me and my dad walking down the fairway. I think 1718. I was like he is just always right I’ll take the blame for all of the bad shots, you know I probably gave her the wrong information when she hit a bad wrong club selections or something You know, I’d say this was wrong, you know, you know It’s like that’s just kind of funny should be trying to get back next year and will be fun and if she does She’ll probably have a different caddy While summer haze saw the open as a learning experience Players like Kerry Webb had come seeking a championship and she was out early shooting a solid of unspectacular even par 72 Four-time Open runner-up Nancy Lopez was playing on a u.s. GA special exemption Helped her make the cut as she finished the first two days at +6 Flora Davies had started slowly with a one over par 73 this was to get back a stroke at the 5th And Davies again with a superb tee shot at the 7 Way right turning it back into the wind Davies would finish the day with a 71 even for the championship Kelly Keaney began the day at 1-under This her tee shot at 16 Let’s see what she’s doing there a nice little punch swing Right at it great shot underneath the hole and that is the straight putt right where she is there and now to convert the birdie Another great approach another putt for birdie at 17 Oh Man After a bogey at 3:00 meg Malan stood at 3-under par as she hit her approach to the par-4 4th This putt would get her back to 4-under At the 5th a 6-iron from 155 yards Allen wouldn’t make many long putts during the course of the week, but from medium range, she showed she still had the touch After a bogey at six Mallon was back on target with this sandwich to the 522 yard par-5 8th good solid full sandwich This putt would give her three birdies in five holes and put her back At the 9th a superb bunker shot to save par nicely nicely done Playing competitor Betsy King was 1 under as she stood over her birdie putt at the 9th Sexy King moves to 2-under par At the 11 King a two-time winner of the Women’s Open and still competitive at age 44 with a precisely struck tee shot For the day she would hit 14 of 18 green The third member of the threesome Lisa Lata Newman had struggled mightily in the first round shooting an 80 this birdie putt at 11 gave her something to smile about At the short par-4 13th, meg Malin missed the fairway and paid the price It would result in a bogey five joy Minh at 13 and her putter had warmed up considerably But it was too little too late Juli Inkster had called Rosie Jones a player to watch this week and this birdie at 7 Helped her finish two rounds at even par The third birdie of the day at number seven is a Jones to +1 Hiromi Kobayashi, hit the shot of the day at the 359 yard par-4 5th She would make an easy birdie but after 36 holes she stood at +5 Julie Inkster was out in 39 and stood at +1 for the championship as she stroked this birdie putt on number 11 They say good cutting is contagious an instant for bar at the 12th Well, that’s a great save and that’s a momentum keeper for Julie a stir again for par at 13 Paster would bogey 16 before taking aim off the tee at the short par 5 18 the hole measures 485 yards and can be shortened even more by cutting the extreme got laid to the left an instant executed it perfectly Now she had just a long iron for her second shot Inkster for Eagle and a round of 73 Airs out hits the brow down the hill it goes looking pretty good. Looking real good Almost she would confer her birdie and was it even par for the championship? Awesome Laura Davies was plus two for the championship But this fabulous shot at 12 helped earn her a birdie I think way back in her stance Starting it out to the right Annika Sorenstam spent the week trying to make something happen Her approach to number 14 was good. Daddy likes it It’s just not going to release up that slope And her birdie putt was even better But a second round 75 dropped her to +4 Davies at 16 to get back to even par for the championship Laurie Cain from Canada opened strongly with a 71 But this shot at the 11th was probably the highlight of her second round as she posted a 2 over 70 forces feet off that hill excellent Shanee wah also struggled on Friday this a near miss at the 11th She finished with a 75 Meanwhile Betsy King stayed on the attack this her second to the par-4 15th sandwich She would birdie to get to 3-under and take the lead Plane competitor Meg Malin would take three putts and drop back to minus three and now there was a tie at the top At 17 king found a fairway bunker off the tee and would settle for bogey o Pounce that was Will find the deep rough But she quickly regained her form this her wedge to the 18th Little ride at the flagstick trying to Bank it off that mound a beautiful shot good spin great spin McMullen had this chip for Eagle but given her lie an up and down for birdie would be a fine effort Well, it’s the Chunkin trendle that’s actually probably a good play to play at the chunk That’s a great shot King for birdie to get back to 3-under Ben Malan for her birdie to get to 4-under par and the 36-hole lead So after two rounds it was Meg Malin in first with Betsy King and Carrie Webb just a stroke back Cristie Kerr was 1-under Julie Inkster, Laura Davies and Rosie Jones were in the group at even par The cut came at +6 and among the casualties were sherry Stein Howard plus 9 the runner-up from two years ago Jenny Chasseur aborn former champion Allison, Nicklaus and Pat Bradley winner of six majors including the 81 open who played in her final US Women’s Open. I Know in my heart that it was time. This is my 27th year out on tour, you know reality? Sets in the competitive cycle and any athlete Makes its turn and I know deep down in my heart that it has made its turn for me. I Can walk away from this? this tournament with you know, my head high my shoulders back and a big smile because I Did win an open and They’re not easy to win witness that this week at the Merritt Club So it was it was time It is said that Saturday is moving day And if that’s the case khari Webb was determined to take charge of the championship this a 6-iron at the par-3 2nd This for birdie and a share of the lead Another birdie opportunity at the 4th Webb was cruising now 5-under and leading the championship for the first time a Third birdie at the 5th And Webb was flying high with confidence After a bogey at the 3rd Betsy King had this putt for birdie at the 4th But King had severely injured her back on the second hole and the extent of her injury was clearly visible on the 16 Barely able to tee it up and unable to make a good swing King hold her tee shot deep into the trees and they double bogey This would be just the beginning of a championship test of courage for Betsy King For 22 year old Cristie Kerr the Women’s Open was a chance for her to showcase her talents this birdie at 6 Was her third in a row and dropped her to 3-under for the championship Khari Webb continued her assault on the Merritt Club with this tee shot at the par-3 7th That would result in her fourth birdie of the day But at the par-5 8th her first stumble her approach sailed into the green side bunker and She couldn’t get it up and down her far Surprised if she gets this ball to the green and indeed it’s come up way short in the bunker. Very very thick lie Meanwhile Betsy Kings tribulations continued with her third shot at the par-4 6th See that hole location down by the water and watch that trickle down. I’ll be caught up though in the Primary cut. I don’t think that’ll get to the water Up ahead at 18 Annika Sorenstam had a birdie try that would drop her to one over for the day five over for the championship Meg Malan began the third round with five straight pars, but the streak ended with this bogey at number six One of the keys to success at the merit Club is putting the ball in the fairway and at the par-4 10th web camera dirty shot right down the middle Khari only missed one green on the front nine and she maintained her remarkable accuracy at ten It’s online. Let’s see if she gets it up on that little level up See it went right up to the edge of the bumper but didn’t get quite on the hood Would this be a textbook par or yet? Another birdie for wag? Khari was now 7-under for the championship five shots clear of the field confidence was growing hole by hole Laura Davis third shot at the par-5 12th Looking to make something happen Davies turned in a solid shot But she would not make birdie Forty-year-old Rosie Jones an Ohio State grad had better lives back-to-back birdies for her moves her to even par for the championship Out in 38 and in danger of losing touch with a leader Webb Malin returned to the attack at the 10th Laura Davies continued her attack at the 13th this her second shot Watching on TV in England her English caddie suggested that she make an adjustment in her putting stance And at least on this short birdie putt it seemed to help Davies finish the day at even par in a tie for third But she ranked 51st and time Cristie Kerr from 159 yards at the 12th one of the few players on the women’s tour that really bends the left arm a lot watch the top Of the backswing the left arm really collapses you were expecting a big week from her But she finished the day at +1 in a tie for seventh Another breakout performance came from the 99 Women’s Amateur champion Dorothea Jellison who opened with a 76 followed by a sizzling 68 and then on Saturday a 72 she would finish 54 holes and even par in a tie for third Webb continued her Saturday surge with this approach to the difficult 14 This is one aggressive shot and one great shot by far the best second we’ve seen at the fourteenth all day but even the best closers occasionally miss Her best effort there all looked to be left very quickly off the putter Malan followed her birdie at 10 with another birdie at the 12th Destroyed is pretty easy convicted this bloke Malins would put a 4-under three behind Webb That is a birdie from magma and that’s two in her last three holes The tee shot at 14 presented the players with some intriguing challenges the customary play carry the water Leaving a long iron shot into the green but the inventive approach used by Meg Malin was a tee shot back down the 13th fairway But this plan was not without peril because a large tree would block the approach to the green What do you think Karen? I will be playing the whole the way it was designed The proper fairway This balance is just out into the fairway, it’s perfect now, I guess I haven’t been over there Up ahead at 15 khari Webb for her sixth birdie of the day Was now at 8-under par On Saturday only a little more than half of the players hit the 14th green and regulation and Malan would be one of the casualties Up across the tree, but I believe it’s got to get up it is well short Roger and that is in the long rough Well short of the green Malin would pay the price. She would make bogey to drop back to 3-under par Betsy King play 14 the traditional way and this birdie was one of the few highlights of her around With her back in agony a day that began with great promise would end in disappointment and an 82 Ballad was again in danger of losing side of Webb She needed a big shot at 15 and she got one finger looking shot if it’s the right Club Great-looking shot just flirted with point in the ball for an eagle to man She said be perfect, but that have been amazing It is a guy and it could have gone in this one was worth the second look From Impact Matlin’s fall started straight at the pin never wavered be it go in Not surprisingly Mallon would take her birdie The 380 yard Par 4 17 demands placement off the team Khari web hits 10 of 14 fairways for the day and here she wasn’t far off the mark Just rolling into the first cottage But she found herself on the wrong side of the hole a large oak tree blocking her path to the hole with a four shot lead Webb elected to take the trouble out of play She’s taken it well to the left But she would not get up and down and with drop back to 7-under par After another birdie at 16 that took her to 5-under Malan finally seemed to be mounting a charge But at 17 the wheels came off her tee shot turned over and found the heavy rough Malin said her lie was so bad. It looked like someone stepped on it twice and covered it with grass Barely carried out at the fairway didn’t advance that ball any more than 40 yards with a 7-iron in her hand Malin took aim at the center of the green hoping for a par Willing to settle for bogey missed ball getting hung up by the wind misses right in that They rough over there where the players have walked off the green To work with two mistakes at 17 and Malin would wind up with a rally killing DoublePlay Up ahead at 18. Khari Webb at this putt for a 67 Still a Remarkable round on a very difficult golf course where that it’s 16 of 18 grains and made six birdies against just two bogeys She was now in control of the championship and had her first open title in her sights the gallery at 18 provided a warm welcome to Malin and the gallant King the final pairing of the day and Though Malin had to be extremely disappointed with her play at 17. She gathered herself for a final run at a birdie Should get it there Not quite so at the end of 54 holes it was Barry Webb in the lead at 7-under Meg Malin was the only other player under par at 3 under Korea’s me Hyun Kim 99 Rolex LPGA rookie of the year was one of four at even par Julie Inkster and Shanee, hua were among those at +1 but clearly this championship was now weds to win and With the round complete Webb’s day still wasn’t over more practice and though many were ready to crown her the champion Webb was not quite ready to claim victory And I think he can never have a big enough lead at the US Open now I wasn’t definitely going to be comfortable if the four shot lead You know if I knew that there was a long way to go and you know I still had had to play some good golf the next day On championship Sunday all eyes were on the prize the bud simple trophy 25 year old car a web clearly has the toughness and talent to close out a tip 3 but even with a seemingly insurmountable four shot lead Butterflies were there we were soaked and there’s the biggest moment when is golf so I think anytime I get they always know some I’ve never stood on the first tee of any of the rounds that I’ve ever played in the US Open and not been nervous Meg Malin strategy was to play aggressively but smart and keep the heat on the opponent Webb’s game plan was simple fairways and greens par was the goal birdie would be a bonus But at the US Women’s Open it all comes down to execution Whoever hits the best shots will win and the player hitting the best shots early was me Hyun Kim This a birdie at the opening hole And looking for two in a row at the second And all of a sudden the five foot one player nicknamed peanut was looming large on the leaderboard this for birdie at the 3rd three in a row to begin her round Kim winner of two tournaments in a rookie season was now tied for second at three under four shots behind Webb Though she never really challenged for the championship kelly keaney played a solid open a closing 71 highlighted by this tee shot at 11 put her in a tie for sixth Despite a bogey at four web’s still seemed in command of the championship at the 6th an 8-iron to the center of the green for an easy two-putt par Over the course of the week the 151 yards 7 played as the toughest part 3 at the Merritt Club. Khari with a 7-iron this ball turning hole after the hole Oh barely carried in the water that It’s quite an error there According to web a bad swing at the wrong time, but now for the first time she was in real trouble this her third shot from the drop area a Shot just left of the flagstick right online But a bit strong That’s nicely done, but it’ll still leave about 12 feet down the hill for a bogey at number 7 Balan had begun the round with six straight pars a Birdie here would really put the heat on Webb Now curry for bogey The mists resulted in a disastrous double bogey and now the lead was down to a single shot At the par-5 8th webb dearly wanted a birdie to get back on track But her tee shot found the thick rough to the left Then she made what she would later call a silly decision Electing to try and advance the ball from a very heavy line Oh I’ll came out laughs straight into the middle of the oak tree got through it got through it just a little bit about 20 yards Ahead of it. She advanced that ball maybe 80 yards For her third shot. She chose the percentage play and punched the ball back into the fairway with Webb staring at a lightly six the door was finally opened for Meg Malin this her third shot Right in the hole When the right Frenchman she’ll have an uphill attempt from there so now Webb with a sand wedge from 90 yards Could she give herself a decent chance to make par? Solid strikes right at it Jennifer’s right distance little deep. There we go. Brings it back. The answer was yes, she could Valon for birdie to get to 4-under and a tie with Webb Great champions can deliver under pressure and for web her par putt was a most pivotal moment Which I think was a turning point for me because I made a silly decision on the 8th trying to play a shutout of the rough, which could have cost me about you, but I made a great up-and-down and You know the rest, you know that that settled me down and I was like, all right. He’s still leading by one Let’s just play some smart golf and good go Meanwhile, Rosie Jones continued her fine play this a fairway metal second shot to the difficult par-4 all have been 12-yard Ninth, they like it ho like yes Easily the best second shot we’ve seen at the 9th today 22 year-old Cristie Kerr is left-handed, but plays right this birdie put her right in the red numbers for the championship at 1-under par Back at the 9th Mallon with another birdie opportunity another chance to tie for the lead She hadn’t made many long putts during the championship but that one from 30 feet was centered cut Grace Park started the final round at +3, but this birdie at 15 got her to 3-under for the day Annika Sorenstam brewed her 72nd hole to finish at +3. It was a top-10 finish But you had to know that Annika was far from satisfied Malon was out in 35 4 shots better than Webb’s 39 and at the 10th faced this difficult approach From the rock and Deering muscled it to the green Shall take that Web’s second shot from the middle of the fairway 9-iron for 135 yards uphill but downwind let’s just a little left to the hole a Beautiful shot checked up just ten feet from the cop Malin for birdie from just off the green and 75 feet from the hole 126 paces slow putt she had struggled all week with her speed on long putts That’s gonna come up well short I Could tell him on the other side of the green gentle, but that’s a good 20 feet short She had to scuff that there’s no way couldn’t miss judge of that bet So Malin was still away And off the mark in her attempt to salvage a for An unforced error for Malin and Webb wasted no time in taking advantage a two-shot swing and Kerry Webb was again in control of the Women’s Open or was she At the 11 Mallon off the tee trying to get back on track Good as this And Mallon would convert the birdie to do back to 4-under one behind web Up at 15 her forget another birdie Slow cutting stroke quick, but from there looking pretty good she would finish with a 70 on a 100 bar total of 287 a strong championship for Cristie Kerr Meg Malins third at the par-5 12th Downwind needs to bounce Boy, did it bounce? Getting pretty firm up here fellas Wow Tari web at 5-under Leading the championship by a single stroke a good solid approach, and she would have no difficulty Making far I think just about as good as she could have played it Malin for birdie from long-range this over 60 feet a Lot of break to the right there And she is not if this been either that’s been the tendency all day long from back there Roger It’s more downhill than it actually is Malins putter which had not exactly been smoking began to turn ice cold With a three-putt bogey at 12 she now trailed by 2 Disappointing bogey for balanus three-hole Somewhat obscured by the drama of the web mountain duel was me Hyun Kim who would quietly continued her climb up the leaderboard? This putt for birdie at 13 would take her to 3-under par just two shots behind Webb back in firm control of her game and her emotions Kerry Webb began to put on a clinic of fairways and greens at 13 a precisely struck iron led to yet another rock solid bar Mallon continued to struggle with her putter Unbelievable another three-putt bogey at 13 In the final round only five players would birdie the treacherous 14 lengthy putt up the hill Rosie Jones would be one of them and This putt dropped her to 1-under par for the day 1-under for the championship Grace Park stumbled a bit coming in with bogeys at 16 and 17 But a closing birdie at 18 gave her a round of 70 and a 1 over par total of 289 Julia inc stirs last round was a nightmare as she carded an 80, but there was one bright spot at 17 for birdie Back at 14 Webb for birdie to get to 6-under But a little too much pace I left her a difficult second putt Despite her problems on the back nine Malin still only trailed by three a birdie at 14 and she would be right back in the Hunt but again, she couldn’t master the speed of the green Webb to save par Could Mallon to match the gutsy para saving Hut by web and stay three behind Her third three-putt in three holes and her bid for a championship had probably come to an end But for Webb there was still golf to be played and she showed why she’s now the finest player in women’s golf at 15 Another iron to the green and another easy par At 16 me Hyun Kim stood at 3-under and was alone in second still trailing Webb by just two shots But disaster struck as she made a double bogey five Left she would also bogey 18 For a total of 288 man Brutally costly Webb now led by four with just three holes to play. This one’s hit solid this hidden going in the water Webb played a safe shot and recorded another textbook par At 17 web again had to deal with the tree on her second shot played her right up over the top of it If it gets up, it’s good What a shot But she lofted a soaring approach that settled softly at the front of the green her seventh straight par would be a formality At the 18th tee with a championship firmly in her grasp Khari pulled out her driver and slammed her tee shot over the dogleg, right? She’s taken in on a very far left line and hammered this bar. I think that’s awesome. That’s the best drive I’ve seen all day that’s gonna just make this five bar into a for par.
